my ground wire is only 6" long. my rca cables and power cables run in opposite directions. for some reason i still have engine whine when reving the car up, turning heat on, shifting gears, etc. i have the system installed in an 81 vette and just have the gound running from the rear compartment to one of the seat bolts. i checked and it's a 12v ground. should i try running the gound and soldering it directly to the frame? or should i get some better insulated rca cables? what else can i do...i'm new to this audio stuff
Re: how to get rid of engine noise (corvettemaster)
I think you did what we all do and hook up to factory wires and you used the ground off the old harness.. I know mine made a wicked sound with the amps on and it was like I knew it was installed correct. But anyway I tore the whole thing apart and checked my wires. They looked all clean and installed. So I thought if I add an extra peice of wire to the groun wire and put the wire to a solid ground.Well whats solid in these cars. Most Fiberglass Ive ever seen.. The shift lever metal has a nut you can take off and put the wire with a loop conector and it will sound great.. Mine did and 0 noise now.. :)
Wait a second.. You run your ground to your seat nut?And its only 6 inches long?Good RCA's are very important.. Fosgate has good ones..Monster Cable is another..
yeah i put the amp in the back compartment area behind the passenger seat. then ran the gound wire through a gourment in the fiberglass that runs through the console area, but i just unbolted the seat, and ran the ground down to the nearest seat bolt, and bolted it back down. it's a solid 12v ground. the only one i could find anyways beside directly on the frame.

Did you install a head unit? If you did, when you connected the wires, did anything spark? If so, your head unit could be bad and you might need to replace it. I did this when I first started installing systems. My wife wasn't too happy about it either, but it was on warrenty.

Corvettemaster, I don't have a clue how to battle the noise. I've been fighting this for two years. I'm at the point now, that I'd like to just put a freaking boom box in the back. Just like high school, all over again.
I've done the ground thing, I've kept the power and signal wires separate. I switched to high quality gold RCA's. You name it.
The only thing I can think of, is the antenna. Make sure it's clean and the ground is good.
Also, I've been told hooking up directly to the battery can really help, as it's a natural filter.
thanks joe. i guess i will try upgrading my rca cables...then try hooking the ground directly to the battery and see if that helps. where do you have your ground wire hooked up at?
Location: Frankenstein never scared me. Marsupials do, because their fassst…and they DART, THAT'S crazy!
Re: how to get rid of engine noise (corvettemaster)
You have a shark body and the batteries are in the back conveniently next to your amp. Run ground to your battery and you will see marked improvement since the run will still be short. Also, try grounding the HU directly to the frame. Sounds like you did everything else right.
