Help needed designing a system

I'm trying to figure out how to put a 12 volt stereo system on one of my Mardi Gras Floats. I figure I'll need about 4 speakers on each side and 4 on the interior roof....How big of an amp should I get and what do you recommend....I don't need the highest quality but don't want distortion...Am I barking up the wrong tree?
