Default HU swap: is a PAC necessary?

Hey everyone... my vette is gonna be here in a couple weeks, and I'm planning on picking up an Alpine CDA-7897 HU to go in it. I was originally planning on doing a complete system replacement, but that's going to have to wait for some time in the future. I know that there is a PAC converter which makes the whole thing a painless operation, but is that PAC necessary, or can you just use a regular harness, crimp, and go? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these approaches?

[EDIT] Nevermind. I found my answer here: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=482231[/url] [/EDIT]
