Subwoofers - Might not be able to fit a 10", will 2 8" equal it?
Ok,
This is in my 70 Pro Street Camaro.
I've been discussing this with another forum member, and I figured more opinions can't hurt. I'm looking at subwoofers from JL Audio... Specifically their w3v2's.
In trying to come up with an enclosure. I have 20"(W) to work with, and a wedge shape initially of about 6" - 7"(H) from the bulkhead to my a max of about 12"(H) where my fuel cell comes into play. The (L) measurement is up in the air, figure rougly 9" max.
My question is - I was initially going to go with a single 10" subwoofer, but space may not allow it. Unless I possible run the sub with cone facing towards the fuel cell. Or can I run 2 8" subwoofers with them facing up (enclosed) towards the deck and get equal bass?
I've heard more isn't always better, but in this case it is at least equal? Or should I just try to squeeze that 10" in there?

use what fits & fits well, that's the bottom line. you can also use 1/2" mdf insted of 3/4 if weight and size is a concern. in small boxes it doesn't pose much of a problem like it would in a larger enclosure. as far as the 2 8's or 1 ten goes..JL's 8w3 is only a 1.5" VC, if you plan on running any strong amplifier you'd probably live longer with a beefy 10" the old series JL 10w6's are on closeout right now for under $150 each, those things have a 2.5" VC & can take a beating. the sub i'm using also works great in a small box & has a big ole 3" vc but they cost around $300 each. if your savy on ebay they are under $200, it's a eclipse aluminum. the other one to go check out is IDQ, they are as popular as super rams here on the forum & must have something going for em.

I'm not sure why you're limiting yourself to one brand of sub. All woofers have specific physical characteristics which will affect their performance in a variety of types/sizes of enclosures. I would look around for something that would give you an f3 where you want it- with the enclosure constraints you have, (and as an aside- 2 drivers will give you a minimum 2dB gain versus one driver). Don't limit yourself to one brand or model of sub- it may not work for you- while another one may work perfectly. Shop around- and don't look at brand names so much- go into a shop- and tell the INSTALLER (not the AUDIO SPECIALIST-SALESMAN who's getting a commission on your purchase) that you want a 10" sub that will give you an f3 of 35Hz in a sealed box at 1.5 cubic feet.

I would run 2 8s over a single 10 ! Would run 10s only if 2 could be fitted !
Also compare the surface area of 2 8s to 1 10.
