Default storage compartment sub mount

I have a 1971 convertible and want to mount a 10" sub in some type of enclosure. I know that it will be a tight fit in back with the top down. I have seen a picture somewhere of a sub that was mounted using the passenger side storage compartment (where the jack usually resides.)
Has anyone here ever done that? Advantages/Disadvantages?

Thanks for any input. Just trying to get some ideas. The stereo is the project for this winter! :D
