Looking for some input here. I want to lose the Blose system and upgrade the head unit and some front speakers to start. What do I need? Head unit, some components(which ones?), an amp for the front speakers? I am very new to this type of upgrade, any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
The Excelon has a 2 year, don't know about the Alpine. As fas as reliability, the Excelon is no different than the Alpine. There are just as many Alpine horror stories as there are Excelon's. I have peddled Excelon's for 2 years and have had little troubles. A really good friend of mine peddled Alpine, he had returns too. Alpine is good equipment, but not the end all of head units like some think.
Both have similar features, it comes down to what you like best.
BTW, I own the 959 and like it alot. It will be going from the daily driver into the vette in about a month.
I like Alpine as much as the next guy I've had about 7 alpine's but my Kenwood Z828 deck that I have had for 2 years has been great not a flaw. At the time I bought it Alpine had no mp3 decks out at the time.
thanks guys for the input. Any input on replacing the blose speakers in the front and the rear. I was thinking about putting a stealth box in the rear compartment with a jl 250/1 powering it. Maybe, since I am using jl for the sub, a jl 300/4 for the two front and the two rear. I don't know about speakers, any suggestions?
do a search on speaker choices. all of us have written the same thing over and over many times.
heres quick rundown:
1) Front speakers only. 6.5" two way components. (sounds better, ive explainedwhy many times in other threads)
Some brands:
JL XR series - Good all around low-mid end speaker
CDT CL or HD - Good more detailed mid end speaker
Focal Polykevlar - Bright and bassy, mid-high end speaker
Focal Utopia - Crisp and lively with good transparancy, high end (i own these)
Dynaudio - Flat and (some say lifeless) accurate high end speaker
MB Quartz - Tinny and bright, QSD is high end
CDT Euro - Wish I could hear a set. I hear they are very warm and natural.
Amps: (Any of these are great)
arc
mmatts
a/d/s
phoenix gold
zapco
Subs:
IDQ10 - Great sound quality driver, ultra tight
JLW3 - Good sound quality driver, almost as good as the IDQ10, but LOUDER.
Elemental e12k - Lots of people like this sub, i havent heard it personally.
read other threads with people asking your same question...
Focal Utopia (awesome)
focal PolyKevlar (damn nice mid bass for the price, better than most - I own these) Need lots of power
Infinity Kappa Perfect Coaxial (very good so I hear)
JL (their high end components)
Amps:
1:p:hoenix gold
or
Alpine (i have a 5 channel amp)
or Kicker
Gee, not too sure about that, I heard the Focal's, and then the Dyn's, and I thought the Dyns, were much more lively& bright, with superb, mids, bright highs, and terriffic lows....
Now sure which set of Dynaudio you were referring to, but I got the 3 way 8"
Series 360... Haven't heard a better sounding system in a C5 yet....
dynaudio's are very flat, very, very neutral. The focal's tweeter has far more 'attack.' It's not only my opinion, but the opinion of many who have heard them (For example on CAF when dynaudio is mentioned someone ALWAYS says that. Call me a bandwagon follower, but that's what I thought to.) I dont know the model number. a 6.5 two way set. I believe it was system 240.
That's what Dynaudio was engineered to do, provide a natural flat response.
Whereas the Focal sets tend to emphasize detail.
I've had Alpine in both my Muscle cars and Sports cars - I Love it.

I hope you can make you descision now

I've installed both professionally. Though it was a few years back, these Leopards haven't changed their spots that much. Stick with the Alpine. 7998 is a top model.
