Default Installing a CD player in a C3

I want to install A sony CD player\Radio that I pulled out of an old blazer I had and put it in my 81 corvette. My questions are do I have to cut up the face plate for the radio because the radio doesn't have nobs like the original, and it's widder. My other question is do those torx screws do anything or are they just there for show? Do they sell installation kits for an 81 vette or is this going to have to be a custom job? I know I should be visiting stereo shops to get these answers but I was hoping for some advice from the forum first. Thanks.

That din size Sony will not fit the stock location and personally I wouldn’t hack up my dash to make it fit. You could however, stick that Sony in the glove compartment since the ’82 model Vette has one. What model # is that Sony? Does it have a remote control for it? Or can you buy one for it? Most Sony's have an optional Remote you can purchase separately. If so, just control the stereo from the remote since you won’t be able to reach it in the glove compartment.

One good thing about having your stereo in the glove box is it will still look stock and thieves won’t know what you have.

Just a suggestion and it’s much easier to do than hacking the dash out. :yesnod:

Gotta disagree. Go ahead and cut your dash. If you regret it later, you can buy a replacement bezel from Mid-America for 99 bucks. I did it in my '79, and here's the result:

By the way, the torx screws do nothing -- they're molded into the plastic. And go get a Chilton's manual to learn the procedure for removing the bezel...

hey im interested in that... i have a 79 also you say you had to cut up the dash however you didnt mention anything about what was behind the dash panel... i was told there was a metal plate that was part of the cars frame that you had to cut out to make the din style recievers fit... any insight on this?
