I have placed a couple of layers of dynamat extreme throughout the entire interior of my car. I am doing the sub enclosure this weekend. I am fortunate to work in an environment/occupation where we do R&D with many types of sound deadener for our generators. Our market is in the mega and super yacht generator packages. When you are supplying the power for yachts that cost millions of dollars, the end customers or their engineers want the power to be quiet and efficient. When they are sleeping at night they do not want to hear the drone of diesel engines.
I went to our engineers and they have hooked me up with some pretty cool stuff. It is quite expensive and I will only have two shots at this with this material. It is called Rockwool. It is reasonably thin and easy to work with. I am going to line the enclosure with the dynamat and then a layer of the rockwool.
What do you all think? Am I taking this entirely too seriously or what?
Location: Frankenstein never scared me. Marsupials do, because their fassst…and they DART, THAT'S crazy!
Re: Decent sound deadener, what do you all think??? (MY2K2C5)
Actually, it isn’t necessary to line the inside of the sub enclosure with dampening material, it is much more important to caulk the enclosure well. However, I did dampen mine after caulking the hell out of it simply to ensure a tight seal and no air leaks.
It also isn’t necessary to spend the money on Dynamat Extreme when you can get the same product for MUCH cheaper with Brown-Bread or Rrammat. That of course is moot now since you have already invested in it but at least you now know for future sound dampening projects. It will save you money.
Sound dampening the car itself is much more important than dampening the enclosure. But, like I said, it won’t hurt to dampen the enclosure, it (along with caulk) certainly will help seal potential air leaks.
Your on the right track dampening your car though, good job!

Most of the dynamat was purchased for $1 extra on different orders I was placing for speakers, etc. I think I only purchased two seperate orders for dynamat so it didn't kill me really. I do believe in a good caulking though. I caulk til I am blue in the face.
I used a material from our company, that they had left over from various projects, to finish dampening my car and the enclosure.
I can admit that it was the posts in this forum that has helped me and it expanded my mind to thinking of different possiblities. I have utilized our engineers quite a bit and some of our craftsmen out on the floor. We have a master cabinet maker and a master fiberglass man in our company. It helps picking their brains that is for sure.
I would like to thank all of you for your help as well. Mostly it wasn't help but a thought towards a different approach or result.
Re: Decent sound deadener, what do you all think??? (R94 LT 1)
I thought ahead on this as well...hehe... I applied the dynamat prior to making the fiberglass enclosure. I thought that I might want to try it both ways. I posted a couple weeks back about the possiblity but didn't get a reply so I just pursued it on my own. Pathfinder thru and thru.... :flag
The dynamat was so thin I didn't really think much about it. I grabbed a piece of plastic that we have here that covers our 1" - 2" super attenuated sound enclosure foam and stuck it to the dynamat extreme with 3M double sided tape. This kept the fiberglass from bonding with the deadener. Since I did this I will be able to place the enclosure in the hole, only thing is the hole is approx. 3/16" smaller on 5 sides...hehe... I am not sure which way I am gonna go but no real damage was done to the car. I have retained the 4 fasteners for the OEM CD changer and the gray carpet liner can be placed back in over the dynamat.
I will see soon which sounds better. I am wondering if the entire vehicle will vibrate with the center cutout being the enclosure. If this is the case then I will go with the fiberglass enclosure I made and then the project can be at an end or at least a break till fall/winter. The bass hit pretty well and it was the first time my wife said that we had too much bass. She likes techno and it thumped her pretty well... :jester
Re: Decent sound deadener, what do you all think??? (The^Nomad)
Long live techno! Bass is good, BUT only when balanced with the rest of the stereo. Your wife says too much bass? Crank up the mids and highs with a new set of speakers and amp! :yesnod: :yesnod:
Re: Decent sound deadener, what do you all think??? (TheWacoKid)
I have already installed CDT Audio 52's in the doors and CDT Audio Cambria 7" ers in the rear. JL Audio 12" Sub and two brand new amps. It kicks pretty well....
I, on a whim, went to car toys last night on the way home from work and bought the Alpine CDA-7998.. :blueangel:
Will be a fun weekend. I am finishing up my amp rack...rack #3. Will also uninstall the new JVC HU I put in a week ago and return that. Put the new Alpine in and have a bit of fun.
Re: Decent sound deadener, what do you all think??? (MY2K2C5)
I used accumat and Rockwool for my car. It took 1 person one full day to take apart the car...the dash, headliner, door skins, rear tail section of the car, seats all panels and carpet (everything but the stearing wheel and the clutch brake and gas pedal. Then every inch was covered in accumat. Every nook that could not be reached by hand was sprayed. It took 1 person two full days to cover everything and 2 people another 12 hours to put the car back together. And last we used Rockwool for the center hump. It did two things for me. It got the heat out of the car, reduced road noise considerably and got rid of all the various drive train noises that C5's make. I think your on to a good combination, my car is extremely quite.
Re: Decent sound deadener, what do you all think??? (MY2K2C5)
I purchased a 6'x4' roll of a product called 3in1.The advertisement stated this product was used on the space program for the shuttles. It is industrial grade double sided.I lined the bottom of the trunk compartment and behind the seats.I used the scraps to line the three compartments. There is a world of difference in the sound level in my car.I believe the raio sounds better also. All for just$30 and about 1.5 hrs. of labor. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy
