Coming back to US from germany, need radar detector
Hi,
So ill be coming back to US from germany and need advice on radar detectors. Ill be stationed in cali.
I guess its between v1 and passport (few options?). Which one is better for cali? Are radar jammers legal in cali? How does it work? Does the cop simply gets a blank reading after shooting you? And then he just doesnt stop you?? Thats an expensive option, so im just entertaining the idea...

I would just say do the speed limit and you won't have to worry about getting speeding tickets. I know over there you hit the highways supersonic, time to slow down.
Thank you for your service! Aim High.

I read that the build quality is just not there on the Max. As far as a lazer alert...any detector that gives you lazer alert is only telling you to get your writing hand ready to autograph a hard copy. The cop has a reading on you milliseconds after you get an alert. Bottom line.

I use a Bel V995. It performs the same as the Escort X50 (same internals) but costs much less. I've picked up radar miles away on the highway before, always given me more than enough time.
When I first bought it, I would drive considerably faster than usual, but now I really stick to max 5-10 over and it just gives me some peace of mind. I don't like surprises and the V995 has served me well for a couple years. It has saved me numerous times.
I'd suggest looking at radardetector.net

I put in a Passport 9500ci with the Dashtronix HUD adapter, if you can justify spending the cash I would highly recommend this combo, and I don't even use the 'live' feature. The GPS is super cool for eliminating false alerts and tagging known speed traps.
For a more realistic budget, the 9500ix has just about the same features, minus the laser shifting. Hard wire it to a switched power source in the car and you're set
I know the V1 works well, but it's just so fugly

Im sorry, but i am a firm believer that US speed limits have nothing to do with safety. It has everything to do with profits that the state gets from writing tickets, as well as feds closing eyes on the fact that US has the worst drivers of 1st class world. So no, i will not drive 65 (the speed limit that was established back in the 70's due to oil crisis, but had not helped oil consumption, but the limit stayed). Modern day econobox is safer than any 70's car... U know what, u want to drive slow, do so, just not in the left lane, thats the root of the problem.

Dude, I just got back from Germany myself and I have been saying the same thing. Looking at cars that would NEVER pass inspection in Germany ,and deemed road worthy , cruising in the left lane spewing smoke and dropping clumps of dirt...absolutely maddening
so yeah, I feel your pain. My C6Z06 had a 9500ci and it was great. I haven't found a reputable shop here in Louisiana that I'd trust to install a new one in my ZR1. Though I'm not a fan of windshield mounted systems, I'm using the 9500xi with a blendmount that is serving me well right now, but man do I miss my shifters.

You can drive as you want. It's your money that you'll eventually cough up.
BUT. You kill someone driving too fast and a ticket will be the last of your worries. It will change forever your life as well as the family of the person(s) you kill.

Speed limits were reduced to 50 or 55 depending on the state in the early 70's. Not 65. After a few years they were raised again, in many cases more than 65.

In germany people drive much faster, and have much less accidents. If im on the autobahn with not much traffic i mostly drive at around 140-160mph, its not a big deal if u have the right car.

You keep bringing up how things are in Germany. That's great, but in case you haven't yet gotten the message, it's different HERE! You either get used to 65-70 MPH driving, or pretty soon, you won't have a license, or can't afford auto insurance, or both.....

My argument wasnt about it being different in US, it was response to u saying ill kill people and it being dangerous.
The reason i created the thread was to get advice on radar detectors so i dont get too many speeding tickets, and what tools people use to drive normaly (i.e. Not by 1950's speed limits).

No radar detector will protect you at the speeds you think you are entitled to drive.
You go fast enough over the limit and are caught (matter of time) there is no ticket. You figure that one out
