I am purchasing my first vette, it is an 87. The prev owner had a cd player in it but had taken it out. So I am left with an install sleeve and some wires. I need to find out what I can install in the car and how the corvette bose amps work with this. I can look into the dash and I do have 2 pairs of female RCA's. Do these go to the bose amps? Also where are the amps located? What type of head unit should I buy? (Dual pre amp outs, speaker wires out, or what?) I have installed many stereos before but I need to understand the amp and speaker setup in the vette so I can have a nice head unit waiting here when I bring the car home ecspecially since I have all intentions of buying a used head unit probably on Ebay. Any help you guys could give me will be greatly appreciated. Thx :chevy

the RCA's aren't factory, for sure. Sounds like he had an aftermarket amp in there. Why dont you pull the speaker grills off and see if the bose is even in there?

I also just bought an 87. It had the stock Bose system in it. I got a standard Cd player to work but it isn't right. I've since seen that there is an interface adapter made to connect an aftermarket CD to the Bose system. It's in my Eckler's catalog for $49.99 P/N35575. I'll have to try it and see how it works before I invest in a whole new system.

Sounds like he had a full aftermarket system in there. The bose is not compatable without the adapter and it stinks even with it. Purge the vette of anything bose and get real stuff.

First off, get a new Head Unit. Why buy used when brand new CD or Tape players cost so little. If you can afford the upkeep on a Vette, you can afford a new stereo.
Getting back to your situation. If the car came equipped with 2 pairs of female RCA's, the person before you probably had a 4 channel amp or 2, 2 channel amps hooked up to the speakers in the kicks or the 6x9 pods in the rear. As you've already figured out, this is not stock. As for the amp locations, if they were stock, there would be an individual amplifier at each speaker. But since they most likely aren't, just trace the power cables or RCA's. Before you go out spending your hard earned money frivolously, find out what kind of speakers you have, and go from there. Remember, sound quality usually equates with spending a decent amount of money, don't cheapen your Vette. If you can't afford it right away, save up for it. And BUY it from a AUTHORIZED PRODUCT DEALER. :yesnod:
