Default Mixing sub sizes - bad idea?

I have a JL audio 12w7 powered by a 500/1 amp. It sounds very good, but not perfect. I'm thinking of buying 2- 8" subs and powering them with another 500/1. Some say thats a bad idea. If the 8 inchers are very high quality
(IDMAX, Brahma or JL Audio 8W7) will I help or hurt my system?

Depends how you cross them over. You want them to produce mid bass taking that task away from the main sub, and you want them to be level adjusted to make it a seamless transition of sound. The last thing you want is them both fighting each other over the same frequency range. maybe the 12 does 40 down and the 8s 40-100hz or so. You'd have to play with it. I'd get a really good shop with a spectrum analyzer to do it unless you have the equipment to max it out. Otherwise, the pair of 10s will be much easier and yield almost as good if not equal results.

I have 2 of the "beta" JL 10W6v2's ... they look like the W7's ... the speakers are rated at 400WRMS each ... I have them running off of a 1000/1 ... it sounds better than my attempt to do the same thing as you with W3's ... I tried to use a 12 and 2 8's ... and it didnt work too well ... I would recommend the W6v2's if you are looking to get 2 10's ...

I agree you don't want the subs fighting each other. Also have the install use the spectrum to tune them, the JL adjustable usually isn't labeled very accurately.
