Default I've got a lengthy sub question

i listen to a lot of techno, i want it DEEP but no distortion, at alllll, i don't care if it's not super duper loud, i dont need to impress the girls 4 miles away
so my questions are
sealed ported or banpass
and are bass tubes good or am i better off with big ole regular speakers
and while your at it
as long as i have enough power from my amp, is it possible to blow out my speakers?

Band pass would be ideal but it takes up tons of room. In most cases, they are only practical in SUVs, vans, cars with large trunks that won't be used, etc. The next best would be sealed. Tight and clean but not much power. If you do it correctly with a good woofer you can get nice and deep though.
You can blow out speakers with to much or to little power. What blows them is distortion. If they distort with either, they will damage and fry themselves eventually. Distortion is when it no longer sounds clean. Bad distortion occurs when you hear flapping or farting from them. The most common way speakers are damaged is with to little power.

Your Questions with answers:

>sealed ported or banpass

Sealed is good for tight, accurate, stop your heart bass
Ported is more of a lower, dragged out drone
Bandpass is the best of both worlds but it DOES require a large box

>Are bass tubes good or am i better off with big ole regular speakers

A "bass tube" is simply a ported enclosure with a normal speaker. You want to use a sub that is designed to work with what you want it to do. You dont want to use a free-air sub in a sealed box....

>As long as i have enough power from my amp, is it possible to blow out my speakers?

The term "blowing a speaker" is very misleading. It is true, as stated above, that distortion is what harms a speaker. I have seen 12" subs with 100 watts of "dirty" power get destroyed but by the same token, I have seen the same sub take 1000 watts and have no problems at all. You want to choose an amp with a VERY low THD (distortion rating) as this indicates how clean the amp reproduces the signal. My Orion 225 HCCA has a THD of .008, and to me that is not as clean as I like. I used to have a Richard Clark amp that produced 50x2 but its THD was .0000001 :)

Hope this helps, I tend to be overtechnical sometimes...

jesus you guys are fast in audio/electronics
yeah I know what distortion is, i didnt know you get get it from too little power, holy poopie
yes it did help, A LOT, I'm going to go with sealed I think, I've got a wagon, but I'll need the trunk room more then the loudness
oh and btw, there is no such thing as being overtechnical,
whats dirty power?

Yeah, if you start to hear clipping (Sounds kind of flatulent) turn that sucka down, or you'll smoke it. :yesnod:

A pair of tens in a sealed enclosure would sound the best MHO

a pair of tens would sound the best to my ears, but not to my wallet :-) I'm not like Bass-crazy at all, I might go with 1 8, I'm more into the higher end poopie, vocals, guitar etc

Dirty power is the same as turning your stock radio all the way up and hearing what USED to be music, and is now that psssssshhhhhhhh sound mixed in with a lot of other crap.

As for a sub, if your going with an 8", you CAN build a bandpass enclosure. Granted its bigger than a sealed or ported, but its only for an 8" driver and would probably take up no more space than a ported enclosure for a 12" driver.

There are ALOT of bandpasses you can build, starting from a first-order going up to a seventh-order. Each design is simple in principle, complex in appearance. Tell me EXACTLY what you want to come from that box and I can give you a box design. :)

one 8 wont be very loud

for SQ and deep bass, a pair of IDQ10's would be good
i have a single idq10, while it's no ear drum popper, it sounds great and goes low for a 10.

sealed - tight, accurate
ported - more efficient, less accurate
bandpass - loud and sounds like crap

:p:

careful with clipping (flatulent noise)
you will smoke speakers pretty quick if you're getting a clipped signal.

The right 8" in the right enclosure, with the right amount of power, is capable of breaking a back window. I have seen it myself.

By the same token, I have seen 2 15" subs try their hardest to vibrate a trunk lid...

True, so true. But I don't think this is the case hear. Sounds like he wants a nice buget system. I don't think a buget 8" will break the glass in this case. However, a nice sealed 10" with moddest power in a proper sealed box could reap rewards. The Image Dynamics IDQ is a good sub, also Kicker Comp VR, or maybe a RF HE 10". Go to a local shop and look around, take some of your music and have them play it, this is about the only way to get close to what you really want. Good luck.

Make sure you make the box with MDF and you will probably want to fill it half full with polyfill.

if the box is the right size you wont need any polyfill. that crap is incase you built the box to small and it works by slowing down the sound wave. if you have the right airspace adding polyfill will make it sound worse. i have a friend who had a couple of kicker 6" subs. no joke i thought they were 12s. you shudda seen these things move they were the funniest subs ive ever seen. they were really clear for how loud he had em too. no distortion and they were blasting. we had to yell to talk to eachother. still my 15s want to pop my glass out of my blazer and my 10s are louder than they are. 2 15" MTX thunder 6000s (great budget sub but i shuould have gotten 12s) and 2 10" eclipse aluminum DVCs. so accurate, so loud... i am an eclipse fan for life. or until they start sucking and selling their stuff at best buy like RF

Polyfill will help depending on the application. Most highend speakers use it in home as well as in car applications when the drivers are in a sealed compartment. Look at the specs of the drivers you are using and see if the cabinet design for sealed calls for polyfill. I have never heard of or heard personally it hurting sound. It is also easily reversable. Just open up the box and remove it. Costs $5 for 4 sub boxes so it couldn't hurt that way either. And it really helped my power handling for the Boston I use in a sealed box made to within a few cubic inches of perfect volume, depending on how close my cuts were and how much extra volume the sealant took up.

i think you'd really be happy with the eclipse titanium series and or JL audio W7 series. i'm EXTREMELY fond of the eclipse ti 10" around $300 for a new one on ebay or $449 ea at my local stereo store. these things just slam with what we listen to, DJ Darkzone just blurs your vision when the bass hits...this is with a single 10" on a 300w monoblock sub amp. faster stuff like Dj irene is awesome too, sub definatly responds fast & they can just take a beating. also do wonderful in small boxes.

what shop can you get a 10" titanium for $450? thats a damn good deal! the shop i usually go to (and will hopfully start working for) sells 10" titaniums for a little over $600 12" for $800 and 15" for $1000. they sell the Aluminum 10s for $450.

the 10" titaniums are 750watt rms arent they? ive heard of people connecting 2 directed 1100d (1100watt rms) amps to a single 12 and the sub taking it with ease.
10":

Moi Beefo. i love these freakin subs, i just wish i had the cash to buy em!
the W7s are supposed to be thier best competition. i like both of their looks but i havent heard a W7, so im still partial to Eclipse. i love my aluminums, but i still want titaniums.

I think both of these subs are a bit much for anyone looking to just add a little low end. these subs are for people who like the bass loud and hard. the worst part about these subs (eclipse at least) is that you need at least 500watts of clean power to run them good. and we all know higher wattage = higher $$$. if you can pick up titaniums for $450 new (not ebay) do it! thats a great deal.

Ok, I think I've made a decision.... http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...XA4100&o=m&a=0
the amp, comes with 2 10" subs!

if i were to get front speakers, i would get these
ahh, they're not on the site, well they're sonys(not my fav. choice, but not too many options for 1 7/8 depth speakers) 100 bucks, and have seperate cones for the mid and tweeters, which is all i really care about, i would probably go some place cheap for the sub box(like i said im not bass crazed)
tell me what you think?
thankss

Are you on a budget? because thats the only reason i would reccomend Jensen. they make crap. it may sound like a good deal because of the 2 free 10s, but i bet money the 10s suck hard. i would say if you just want a little extra thump, look into kicker, JL, polk, or precision power (ppi) and if you are on a budget, buy off ebay. i bought my 10" aluminums for $225 each, and i bought 2 Directed 1100d mono sub amps for a total of about $600. Reatail an 1100d is $750!! if your not on a budget for amps, then PPI, MTX, Alipine V12 (i love mine) Eclipse etc. if you are budgeted then all i can say is EBAY. I bought a 400watt PPI amp for arround $200. retail on it was about $600 i believe. just make sure the auction says there is nothing wrong with it. not "it was working when i took it out" or "as far as i know it works great!" chances are it does, but if you buy a damaged item then they arent required to take it back. if they say it does work, and it dosent, then they are required to.

I would stay away from two things in your post, Jensen and Crutchfield. Crappy stuff. Kinda like putting on GS stripes with a paint roller.
