Default Head units--which brand is best of these?

Looks like I'm just going to get a new head unit for the aux in, and upgrade the rest of the stereo down the road.

Question: the brands of head units I saw there were JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony.

Of those brands, any in particular that are better then the others? Any to stay away from?

Thanks.

Forgot to also ask---I know the factory head unit is alot bigger than the C5 bose stock head unit. Does anyone in particular sell a "corvette" plate that will surround the new head unit to take up the extra space?

Thanks.

It sounds like you went to Walmart... Pioneer is OK. Alpine is good.
Kenwood isn't bad.

JVC is mediocre.

Sony is bad.

Kenwood seems to be the runaway winner for best Nav, but I'm very satisfied with my Pioneer.

If you want to get a double din sized unit click here.

If you're looking at single din HU's you can get a fancy mounting plate here. I had the blue illuminated one and it looked pretty cool (pic).

Thanks a ton Mark.

That face place looks sweet.

Question: from the pics on the link to the "double din" sized unit I can't tell how exactly it differs from stock. Can you explain what "double din" means?

Thanks again.

The 'industry standard' measurement for radios is a DIN. The normal smaller radios are all 1 din, the C5 stock radio is an odd size at 1.5 din. The C6, and most aftermarket Nav units, are 2 din. You can easily install a single din sized unit into a C5 with an adapter plate like the illuminated one I had, or you can swap out the entire dash surround and mod the mounting brackets to put in a double din unit with a full sized screen.

If having the absolute best nav out there isn't the most important thing toyou, then my vote goes to the Alpine IVA W505..I love mine

What about if I don't even want nav? Just a great cd radio with audio in. and audio in is most important, but I suppose they all subtantially similar

I have used Pioneer Single DIN units for a years and they have been great.
I recently upgraded my C5 to a Kenwood Double DIN, with the Garmin based NAV system has been excellent.
So many options, is not always easy to make a choice.....good luck with your upgrades

I definately want a single din since I don't want any of that nav stuff.

So it sounds like, as far as sound quality goes, alpine, kenwood, and pioneer are all very good, maybe in that general order?

Does the headset matter as far as hooking up to different speakers goes? For example, if I see an alpine or kenwood that I really like, would I have a problem hooking it up to a pioneer speaker if those are the speakers I get down the road?

Thanks.
