Default Sub placement in a C4.

I have always been very interested in car audio for like the last 17 years. I have read tons of magazines, scoured the net, made custom fiberglass door panels, ect... I used to know quite a bit, but it was all self taught, I have simply never known anyone else who had my level of enthusiasm.

Anyway, I finally got the car I have always wanted, a Corvette. It's a 1990 Coupe. I have seen and read about the different places you can put your sub.

Has anyone here actually experimented or heard any particular sub placement that sounded better then the others? In a car with a trunk you can face the sub into the corner of the trunk and it will help increase the low frequency extension of the sub and make it sound noticebly louder too.

It kind of seems to me that there is no good way of mounting the subs in a vette to get the same effect. I was actually thinking of building a wall behind the seats and mounting the subs in that, facing forward, and mounting an camera with excellent quality inside the back window facing out to get a decent view behind you. Im talking nearly high def video with excellent characteristics in low light conditions. I am a little worried about how ugly that would look though, plus I would lose the storage space while already sitting inside the car (being able to reach back). But then again, this car is for extreme fun, so maybe I will go all out with something like that.

Has anyone here competed in any car audio competitions, SPL or Sound Quality who can offer any advice on overall speaker placement?

I don't want to weigh down my car with gear and plan on making all my enclosures with carbon fiber, and possibly even mounting my amplifier IC's to the enclosure itself. Carbon Fiber is a pretty good conductor and would probably make a decent passive heat sink.

If you read the C4 sticky at the top of the section, you will see that there are two different places to put subs in a C4 coupe. First, an 8" sub will fit in the place of the stock rear speaker. Most people on here will tell you that you do not want to put rear speakers into the back of a Corvette, as it mess's up the imaging. I am going to be installing two 8" subs in my car soon. Or you can put one 10" sub into the area of the storage bin. Since your car is a '90, you will only be able to use the one behind the passenger (ABS pump is in the other side). I am not sure if the search function is working yet, but if it is, do a search on C4 installs.

You mean I can't just set a sub enclosure in the back? The ONLY two places are the stock rear speaker locations and the storage bin?

Obviously, you can put a sub were ever you want too... But if you intend to park the car somewhere out of your sight, you would want for the install to be as stealth as possible. You also want to be able to store the top in the back of the car, so this is also a consideration.
Have you taken a look at the C4 FAQ and What Do You Run sections at the top of the forum? Lots of good info and ideas there.

Thanks for your reply. yeah, I took a look at the c4 faq.

I am thinking that the kind of installation I am going for is of a different caliber then what most folks around here are going for.

I was looking for a location that would be the best for sound quality, rather then visual appeal.

Not really related to subs, but I did see a magazine article or something waaaaayy back when where someone was able to install horns under the dash. The front of the horns were about 2" by 10" if I remember correctly. Focal was the brand? Been too long. Horns require a ton of equilization, at least a 21 band but is very effecient and can be driven to ear splitting levels with just a few watts.

I have actually been thinking of installing an 8", or possbily a 10" midwoofer in the approximate area that the factory front speakers go.

It also occured to me to install two 18" subs behind the seat.

I don't care about how "stealth" the install looks at this point. The car is going to visually stand out anyway when I get done with it

I will have a pretty good alarm system though, I plan on making it custom. It will utlize the backup camera, (other cameras?), GPS and possibly a wireless internet connection.

Do a search on Spkrboy, he put an 8" mid in the doors of his '92, mounted the tweeters in the dash. Someone else on here but two 10" subs behind the seats, don't remember his name. I'll see what I can find.
