rought budget, any other requirments... i got a whole setup in mind already i think
i highly recommend adding an amp, unless he doesnt really plan on turning it up loud
also u most likely will loose a little bit of bass
with all that said u can replace radio, keep ur stock speakers and bose subs while bypassing the bose signal processor which is prly why ur speakers dont work if i recall u made a post or osmething regarding this

That also sounds like an option. He likes bass, just not enough to want to add large subs with an aftermarket system. If he could get away with just replacing the deck and it sounded good, he would do that in a heartbeat.
You are correct. I started a thread last week about how the sound in his vette suddenly changed. I guess he could just replace the deck and see if he likes the way it sounds. We need to find an audio shop that has already done this in a vette so we don't have to tell them how to do their jobs.
how comfortable are u doing some basic wiring, honestly just a desk swap isnt a horriable job at all.
personally i think u need to pull deck out and test some of the pinouts to verify all 4 speakers less the bose subs are good still. woudlnt be too hard if interested i can get u the info

I really don't have the right equipment to test speakers. I think I'll leave this to the "pros."
I told him that he should take the opportunity to do the deck and speakers, who knows-he could replace the deck and the speakers die soon afterwards.
its actually quite simple and u really dont need anything fancy
my concern is that without the bose subs he will feel like he has lost too much bass

i think that would be a great option as well which is why i mentioned pulling radio and testing to make sure all the speakers are getting a signal still. it literaly invoves taking 2 pieces of wires sticking them into one of the pins on the harness and hooking to a AA battery to see if the speaker pops

Exactly what I was thinking, PV.
I would play the music and just use balance/fade adjust to play each speaker by itself. If it's just one speaker, then it's probably blown. He could swap left/right side to see if the problem follows the speaker or not.
Follows speaker = blown speaker.
Stays on that side = bad radio/amp.
Replacing the stock Bose speakers with stock speakers is an option. You can probably find replacements on the Forum easily enough. I would upgrade the 3.5" drivers at that time, too... it's a cheap & easy upgrade.
If you want to totally upgrade, do a deck, speakers and an amp as a minimum. (Ditch the rear speakers completely, or just keep the stockers.) Dampen the doors with dampening material and sound absorption material for added bass response and a more quiet cabin.

Yes, all four speakers work, they just sound bad.
I have used the balance/fade function-I did that this weekend. All four sound bad. That is why I assumed the speakers were good. It would be strange for all 4 speakers to go bad at the same time, so I assumed the deck went bad, not knowing there is another part that was mentioned earlier in this thread.

It depends on how much an amp adds to the cost.
I told him that if he goes with just speakers and a deck he could loose bass, so he said that he might consider getting a sub as well. He is actually going to go to a stero shop or two today to see if there are any specials.

alpine cde-9874 radio
pioneer gm-6300f amp
polk speakers
coaxials for rear db651 (coupe) or db521 (zo6, frc, vert)
fronts either db651s if powering from a radio or step up to db6501 components if using amp
IMO get 2 pairs of the polk db651s and the alpine radio wire it all up and u might be good, if he needs more bass pick up a bazooka bass tube
my recommendation is a radio prly a basic alpine, 4 channel amp, component speakers up front, coaxials in the rear
