Default which speaker plates

Well I picked up a set of Alpine Type-R 6.5" components today and am going to make some speaker plates out of some 3/4" MDF, but my speakers came with two styles of plastic mounting plates that I suppose you could mount to the MDF. My question is do you guys just mount your speakers directly to the MDF or mount the little plates and then mount the speaker to the plate? Thanks

I may be wrong, but I think those extra speaker plates enable you to hold the grills for the speakers. I didn't use the grills, but did use the plates because I liked the beefier look (even though you can't see them with the door panels on)

go directly to the mdf, dont make the plate too big as with 3/4 mdf if its a bit too big it will hit the window/lock switches when you put the panel back on
