Default Advice on rear speakers choice..

Staying with JL coaxials, I can get either their Evolution line XR650CSI which is being discontinued, or their new Evolution C5650x..

Any thoughts or opinions as to which to go with?

The only difference I can see is the XR uses a 1" aluminum dome tweeter & the C5 uses a .75" silk tweeter..

I will be feeding the rears with a 4x150 amp, so they will get some good clean power..

Thanks..

Most folks don't bother with rear speakers. Rears are for fill only and in a cabin as small as a Vette's there isn't really a big need for fill. Even if you do decide you want rears, feeding them 150 is bigtime overkill. In order to balance the soundstage so that your fronts (the most important and high quality speakers) are the dominant players you'll have to dial the gain WAY back on the rears so that much power is way more than you'd need.

My advice, unhook whatever rears you're running now and drive the car for a while. My guess is once you stop thinking about it you'll realize that you don't notice the lack of rear fill, that was certainly my experience and previously I was a rear fill guy.

Thanks Dan for the input..

But....

I 've had my system for 8 yrs without rears, and as good as it sounded, there was always something missing..

When I sat in other cars with much less of a system than mine, but with rear speakers, the sound was so much better, more encompassing..

So to me (personal preference, haha), I like to be "immersed" in sound, instead of it coming from the fronts only, although audiophiles will say it doesn't re-create the concert stage setting..

Maybe it stems from my younger days of having the old 6x9 rears blasting away, and using some 4x6's for front fill.. ! Haha!

It's certainly a matter of personal preference and if that's the way you like it, go for it.

To maintain an even soundfield I would recommend going with coaxials from the same line as the components you put in the fronts, if possible. Otherwise the same manufacturer at the very least so that you don't have a big diff between the "voice" of the front & rear soundstage.
