Default XM- Sirius Deal

Justice Dept Approves XM-Sirius Deal

Mar 24 03:08 PM US/Eastern

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Justice Department has approved Sirius Satellite Radio's $5 billion buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio.
The merger was approved despite opposition from consumer groups and an intense lobbying campaign by the land-based radio industry.

Regulators said the merger is not likely to substantially hurt competition or consumers

I wonder if they are going to let you choose which channels from each that you want, and then charge you accordingly. There are channels on both that I really like........

I trade stocks for a living and stare at a news wire. It's for real. XM stock is up 17% on the news, and Sirius is up 10%. Finally!

First thing I did when my XM expired was to get the GM-1 converter. Wonder what this is all going to mean for programming?

Suppose to be offering "channel packages" so you only pay for what you want. Monthly charges are also suppose to be lower, maybe even half of what they are today.

Still requires FCC approval and they turned it down last time it came to them:

In a perfect world....The companies use different technologies and different satellites, and obviously do not have any extra bandwidth for more content. Xm has their bit rates squeezed so tight it's damn near unlistenable. There is also no interface between the companies where xm can easily "ship" content to sirius and vice-versa. Who knows what they're gonna do, they've got some technical challenges, and are swamped with debt. Maybe bear-sterns can float them some working capital.
