Default Replace Bose Head w/aftermarket

On a 1993, can I replace the head unit with an after market unit. I really don't want to deal with new speakers, amps, etc. I just want a nicer looking unit with more control.

No, you need to replace all or buy an adapter that costs $$$ and doesn't work that well. Gm integrated the amps with the speakers and made them work on non-standard specs. Wrong impedance, etc. Most head units have some power built in. You really only need to buy speakers and use the power from the deck. You can add an amp later. Figure $600 + labor for head and 4 speakers. You can try Highway Audio in Edison on Route 1. I used to work there. They have good stuff and will be able to help you out.

the "expensive adapter" which 92TripleBlack has not named (and would probably rather commit suicide than name and endorse :D ) is the AudioLink adapter. it not only allows you attach a Bose head unit to aftermarket amp and speakers, but it will allow you to attach an aftermarket head unit to the existing non-standard Bose sub-amp/speaker combos.

i only mention it as an option. not a good option in my opinion too, but an option nonetheless.

that being said, i also say - "overhaul the entire system," especially if you are getting an aftermarket head unit. if you want to keep the Bose speakers because you are strapped for cash, save your pennies and buy some nice standard speakers instead of spending money on the AudioLink.

if you are interested in doing the job yourself give a holler. i did my 92 just recently. took a week, but if i actually knew what i was doing and with better planning it could've been done in a full day.

I agree with 92TripleBlack again. If you are going to front the money to replace the head unit, you just need to go ahead and get new speakers for the car, because the adapter they are referring to sux. The Bose system is just shameful in how it performs. You will be much happier with a new headunit and after market speakers.
