Where can subs go besides rear center storage box?
I'm not a big fan of the idea of putting a sub in the rear center storage box in my Vert. An installer at HiFi Buys seems to think he can put something right behind the seats. I'm skeptical. What have you guys seen that isn't in that storage compartment? Is my installer on crack? (I'm not convinced I'm using him yet, I might get ambitious and do it myself)
It depends on how much bass you want. You can just use smaller speakers that require less box volume and fit them where you can. Or you can add several small speakers to try to add up to one larger speaker. If you do the math on circle areas its easy to see that it takes alot of small speakers to add up to one big one, but this may fit your needs of space and required bass level. Several speakers can be wired up in several ways too. 2 ohms 4ohms 8 ohms back to 4 ohms, you get the idea.
It is the volume of the box that is the biggest hurdle. You can Check under the dash for space, as well as other areas. Add them up and see if this will work. Depending on the space behind the seats it could be done, with the exception that it also might be muffled if too low powered and small. You could place an unboxed speaker just to try it out. It will be slightly weaker and much less punch but would give an idea.
BTW I don't think much of the storage box, it's too small for my tastes.
Wouldn't tamper behind the seats any drilling goes directly into the gas tank...JL makes 6" subs you can put one in each of the rear outside storage compartments....

Behind the seats quite frankly is an impossible fit, unless you disable easy entry and like to sit with the seatback raised some. Otherwise, when the seat and the seatback both go back, there's not even an inch of clearance down that seatback. The issue of drilling into the gas tank can be bypassed, but the physical fit won't work.
You could use the previously stated 6" subs in the side compartments, but their output is less than staggering. Seal the front doors properly with silicone and V-Block, and you can get nice bass out of them with an 8" in each door.
On NSXs, they don't have usable storage space, but, like the C5, they have a long footwell. It's possible to glass an enclosure to fit the very front of the footwell with an 8" firing rearward, and not really lose any usable legroom on the passenger footwell. You do lose access to the wiring harness and fuseblock up there, so the box needs to remain removable. It's doable, and not really that hard if you can use 2-part expanding foam. I've never seen this idea done in a Vette, only on NSXs. It will work though, I've planned it out before.
Otherwise, EVERY sub install in a C5 I've seen has used that rear well, it's good for nothing else!

Hmm, interesting. Some quick websearching shows that the factory installs a 4" "subwoofer" (4 inches? sub? huh?) in the passenger footwell in the NSX. Not sure about doing it to my Vette, still seems like an odd spot for sound gear...

If you dont like the idea of putting the subs in the compartment... I would suggest you place themin some sort of custom box... I dont think you could fit it in the space beind the seats....
I have placed my subs in the compartment which you speak of... it seems to be the best place for the install... I put in 2 10's and put a capacitor in the side compartment along with the amp on the back wall..( I have a coupe)... I used the stock HU which I think is fine... but I wanted more bass... with the amp I also powered two new Infinity Coax's in the rear speaker locations and just added dynamat in the front... The Bose subs in the doors are not that bad to me...but the new Infinity's add enough Highs to mix well...
Re: Where can subs go besides rear center storage box? (eison)
Once I complete the tubbing of my coupe I'll look into placing my sub
in the rear hatch panel (facing forward) with the enclosure located between
the rear hatch panel and rear facia. Will probably need some sort of baffle
to eliminate the directional problems of a forward facing sub. I think there is
plenty of room for the enclosure, I have 12" XPL'S Which require 1.5 cuft per,
if not Isobarics are in order.
Will provide commentary and pics once underway.
