Default 1996 C4 Bose to Aftermarket - what to get?

I am tired of the Blose - half the time it will not read any of the cd's I have burned, gives that damn error screen on the display.

I am looking for a good, not great, cd/mp3 head unit that will fill the double din slot and replace the speakers. I hate looking at those that have the filler plate, it looks kinda half a$$ed to me.

Which is the best bang for the buck for the head unit? How much of the wiring has to be replaced? Also, best bang for the buck for the speakers?

I am not looking to add too much weight, as I road race/autocross the car, and cannot afford any extra weight. Also, no subs - they do not allow you to pass tech if you have a bass tube, and I use the passenger side storage bin to put my backup gun (I am a LEO) in when I am driving.

Thanks for any and all help. And yes, I read the C4 FAQ sticky.

One thing for sure is you can't get a double DIN to fit without modifying The dash both internal and external. The 96 slot is a 1.5 DIN. That's all the advise I can contribute at this time.

If enough of you C4 guys are interested, you might be able to get a custom install kit for the C4. Do a search for a guy called "Vrum Vrum" here and maybe he can hook you guys up. His products look

I have his kit in both of my C4's and it looks so much nicer than the metra kits. He ran out of all the C4 kits he made and hasn't made anymore. If enough of you guys get together he might consider making another run of them.

since when? It's a double DIN. No ifs, ands or buts.

The problem is that the DIN standard has no standard for depth... good luck.

Don't jump his ass too bad, he got that info from me... and I said:

"1. I believe the space in the C4 is designed for 1.5 DIN instead of double DIN. You can modify the space to allow for fitment of a double DIN, but expect to modify the surrounding area. (Front and inside of dash.) Hopefully more will chime in on it here."

Either way, it's good to see our C4 brothers posting here...

This is what a Vrum Vrum faceplate looks like. This one is painted to match the console and bezel of my '90.
