I think it depends a lot of what you are getting hit with and which detector you have. For radar, the environment really affects how much warning you get. I have had cases with the 8500 where it seems like I get 2 miles of warning on the open highway. In other cases, I've only gotten a block or so in town. I have been hit many, many times and not gotten a ticket or warning since getting this unit 1.75 years ago.
For laser, with normal detectors, once you get hit, it is usually all over. For the Vettes, it is harder to lock on so you may get a little notice.
If you get a unit with a Laser Jammer like the Escort Passport SRX I recently had installed, you are supposed to get anywhere from 5 seconds notice against the best laser guns to 30 seconds with older guns. Some claim that there are guns that cannot break through the jammers at all, but there is a lot of controversy there. I have been hit multiple times since having the unit installed and have not gotten any tickets, but that does not really mean much. I have a buddy locally that will soon have access to a laser detector (Spectre II, I beleive). We are going to try it out and see how well these things really work. I'll post after we do.
