Default MDF or??

Ive got some 1/2 mdf I used to make some templates for the rear 6.5 speakers, I dont have a lot of room to play with as Ive go thte speaker screwed to the mdf and then the mdf screwed to the plastic peice where the stock speaker screwed too.
The problem is with the it in place the speaker now sticks out to far and Im unable to put the cover back on so I need some thinner material, I know that mdf likes to crack close to the edges which is where ive got the screws.
Im not even sure how thing you can get mdf? Is there any other material that would be suitable?
I think 3/8 *should* do it.

Thanks

1/4. Should be fine. If it cracks, put some wood glue on.

Thin MDF is terrible stuff.

Try ABS plastic... 1/4" by itself or 1/8" with fiberglass reinforcement. Unless Komoman wants to part with some canvas phenolic sheet.

Well, I just got in from looking for some 1/4" mdf and NO-ONE here has it. Only 1/2 and up.
I guess Ill have to sand down what ive got.

Grab some 1/8" Hardboard and double it up with polyurethane glue (Gorrila Glue). It's better than trimming down 1/2" MDF because MDF is not a consistent material throughout its thickness. As soon as you remove the surface layers, MDF becomes significantly weaker. Hardboard will do fine until you can find a better solution.

I ended up sanding down about 3/16 off, and it was still fairly strong, so I used it and it worked well.
