First things first, as I have said before, I am a complete novice to the audio world, so please be kind! I need some suggestions for speakers for my doors, and I hope to be in the $150 range.
I got a great deal on an Alpine CDE-9881, so that alone (no amp) will be pushing the speakers. After working on jet aircraft in the service my hearing is less than perfect, so I’m not needing the very best in speaker technology, but I’d like to improve on my stock system.
I listen to most everything from Diana Krall, to Alison Krauss, to Hatebreed. Honestly I mostly listen to metal in the Corvette; booming bass that rocks the car next to me is not my style.
Just get some cheap coaxials in your case. Maybe infinity reference or alpine type S. Listen in stores, buy online cheaper.
I'm googling both speakers now. I had just started researching JL Audio TR650-CSi speakers, any thoughts on how they compare to the infinity or alpine? Looks like the infinity and alpine are about 1/2 the price!

Coaxials are more suited to head unit power. If you planning on adding an amp later, then the JLs might be a good bet. Though they DO have good efficiency.
if running off headunit power deff go coaxials and put some deadner in the doors behind where the speakers go regardless, i highly recommend some components and a small 2 channel amp.

OK make me smarter on amps etc. The reason I wasn't thinking about an amp was that the ones I have seen before take up tons of space, and I assume they cost a fortune. I don't want to give up ANY usable hatch area (or the under hatch area) and don't want to shell out major $$. Where could I hide a small amp, and how much would it cost me?
you could surely fit that amp down low behind the passenger seat and loose maybe 1 inch of travel, if you have a z06 you can prly get it under the seat, wiring would be 30-40 dollars and you could do components or coaxials whichever is in your budget. A nice entry level coaxial http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/pro...products_id=49 I have installed these in a number of forum memebrs cars and everyone has been very happy especially for the price, im not saying these are the only speakers just my recommendation.
Be forwarned you are going to loose a little bit of bass by ditching the bose subs.
if going with head unit power keep an eye on efficiencey of the speaker (measured in db @ 1w/1m) the higher the # the louder it'll be at any given volume. That means that you dont have to turn your head unit up as high and will be have some cleaner sound. i think the infinity line is up in the 91 db area.
also if you want to look into amps that dont take up any space and you can handle a soldering iron, check out the chip amps over at 41hz.com the quality is supposed to be pretty good and it'll give you a little extra umph at a very small cost in space

I've got Infinity 6012i speakers (coaxials) up front in my C5, running off deck power and they sound pretty decent. I'm hoping they sound a little better once I hook up the extra amp I've got (Fosgate P200-2) If not, I'll replace them next year with some nice components (probably Focal)
For the rear I've got some Alpine SPS 17C2 coaxial speakers, but they seem to distort a little more than the Infinity's do (the Alpines are also running off deck power) I've set the fader all the way to the front though, so it fixes the sound stage a little (since I found I heard the rear speakers way more than the fronts when the fader was at zero) and then the Alpines don't distort.
The one problem I have with coaxial speakers running off deck power is that they don't put out very much mid bass at all. So if you're only running coaxials like that, there is too much missing from the low end. It sounds worse than the factory system like that.

speakers are totally subjective. you have to go listen to them all and decide. hopefully you can find a local shop that has a wide variety to compare them fairly side by side. After my wife and I did that we decided on MB Quart. Nothing else we listened to compared, my .02 worth
