Bose Speakers with Non-Bose HU?

Looks like I need to replace the HU in my '88. The left side has stopped working. I was thinking about replacing it with something with CD anyway, so no big deal. The question is whether I need to repalce the speakers as well if I go with a non-Bose HU. I assume so, but figured I better ask. I'm not a big audiophile - in fact the stereo is off more than its on, so I'm just wanting a basic system to listen to on long drives. I've heard mixed reports on the HU being intercconected to the Climate Control and anit-theft system. Most people seem to think that started later than '88 - correct? I hope? Thanks
