I've decided to upgrade the stereo finally. When I got the car, there was already a Kenwood KDC-6011 installed, but it is still running stock speakers. I bought a cable to allow my iPod to play through it, but I haven't hooked it up yet.
I think I'd rather change head units in the process of the upgrade so I can control the iPod through the deck, and also have XM built in instead of having my Roady sitting in the console.
So, to that end, here's what I've come up with after perusing the FAQ and every page of this forum. Suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated. I'm interested in a stealth install, so all components will be hidden behind the factory grill covers, and I think I might also built a false floor in the rear similar to one I've found already here. This is all going in my '94 Coupe.
Head Unit: Alpine CDA-9857
Front Speakers: Infiniti Reference 6010cs 6-1/2” components w/ crossovers
Rear Speakers: 8W3v2-D4 8” subs
Amp: Rockford Fosgate Punch P450.4 4-channel car amplifier
60 watts RMS x 4
Plan to bridge the rear 2 channels for the 8's wiring each coil in series and then the 2 in parallel for a 4 ohm load? Wiring them in normal 2 ohm load could net you around the same watts but place moe strain on the amp.
Otherwise looks pretty solid, one of the things that the new alpines do well is their ipod integration, may be worth the wait of a month or so to see what the 07 line brings feature/reliability wise.

You lost me a little bit. Are you saying that it will be better to wire the 8s in a series and then parallel? Or just one or the other? I'm reading now about series and parallel wiring, but I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're telling me I should do.
Sorry, a bit of a stereo noob when it comes to the ins and outs of some of this stuff.
eta: As for the amp, should I use it to drive only the rear 8s, or connect it to the fronts w/ the crossovers also?
Bridge channels 3/4 to your 2 8's. Wire the 2 coils on each 8 in series initially (so 4+4=8 ohms per speaker) and then join the 2 drivers in parallel (8 & 8=4 ohms) and connect that lead to your amp channels 3/4 bridged (directions should be given in the manual or even on the amp itself)
Hope that helps, from a power/efficiency standpoint that is your best wiring option IMO.
Thanks for the reply. Once I get the equipment and begin to get some fabrication work done, I'll probably sketch up a wiring schematic to make sure I've got it right and post that to make sure it's correct.
Don't buy the 9857. It has none of the features that make alpine good. Look at another brand. The pioneer 7800 is a MUCH better alternative - I love mine.

Does this Pioneer unit have Ipod control? I have the Pioneer 5700DVD and the Ipod control is terrible.

What's missing from the Alpine?
Also, what's the general concensus on Polk Audio speakers? A friend of mine has components and subs in his car and they sound great, so I was kicking around the idea of using Polks instead.

Thanks again!
I have the Polk Momo 6.5s which I bought online for fairly cheap and they rock.
I also have the Alpine 9857. While I am dissapointed that it doesn't have the crossovers that some of my previous alpine's have had, I really like the display and especially the iPod functionality...
Luckily my amp has infinately variable crossovers, so I am just using them to set up my sound stage.

Everything but volume control, bass, and trebel levels.
No real EQ, no crossover settings (uber useful) no adjustable button color, worse, less legible screen than previous years.
It's the Kia with manual windows and 14" tires of the car stereo world.
Polk speakers are very good for the price. I'd go with Polk or Infinity for my sub $100 choice. Both are easy to find on a sound wall, and you can a/b them.
