My old stereo plan fell through, so I am starting over. I am thinking about running 8" subs and 3.5" speakers in the door panels. 5.25 in the back and maybe a set of tweeters in the doors or a plilars. 2 4 chanel amps.
I dont really know waht you mean by 3 way. I was thinking an amp (4 channel) to run the 8" subs in the doors and the 3.5 and a second amp to run the tweeters and the 5.25s. But I am an extreme novice so feel free to tell me I am crazy.
I have a Pioneer Premier 680mp HU. What would it be like if I just did the 8's, the 3.5's and the 5.25's off the HU, wouldnt that be kind of a upgrade but similar type system to oem ?
what you described is what we call an active 3 way system. not crazy but it's advanced. you have ultimate freedom over tuning and component selection but if your head unit doesn't have a great x-over then you'll need to get an active x-over. a few of us on here are doing that sort of setup. i have a hybrid 3-way system. 6.5" subs in the doors running off of one 2 chan amp and then the 4" and tweet running off a second 2 chan amp with a passive x-over. then i have a third amp for the sub in the trunk.
if you're a novice you may want to stick with a simpler set up. maybe a 2-way component system in front (6.5" and tweet) running off of two chans (one chan per side because you are going to use the passive x-over) and then bridge two chans and toss a sub in the rear.
if you ran all that off the h/u you would run into issues wiring it all up and the h/u just doesn't have the juice to power an 8".
in a vette you really dont need them at all becuase you will barely ever hear them, especially if you have nice speakers in front. They say you need them because then they will say you should amp them and by time its done its another 2-300+ in there pocket
for the next few weeks drive around with your rear speakers off (fade knob) after you forget about not having rear speaker sound, you can will be able to figure out if you're a no rear speaker guy. you do have to give it time. we are so used to having rear fill that when it's gone we may think something is missing. When you are used to it then you will be able to appreciate the improved soundstage

I tried that in my GTP (rear speakers off) the preparation for the last time I re-did the vette. In my GTP with the factory system, I needed the rear fill, there was something missing without it.
Now with the last system I put in my vette (currently being redone) I ditched the rear fill. It sounds great that way. so even though it may not sound right with the OEM, install the fronts and a sub then try it.. if you still don't like then add your rear fill

I suggest a 6.5" componet systems up front with a single sub in back for a reallly nice set-up.
