First, I want to point out that I searched and read, but didn't find the info I'm looking for.
Basically what I'm looking for is a speaker upgrade for my 99 FRC. It didn't come with the Bose system. I'm currently running a new Alpine HU (don't remember which model).
So for the fronts I was wondering if a 6x9 will fit? Or is a 6.5" all the bigger that will fit?
For the rears, I read something about cutting the opening to allow for a 6.5" rear speaker.
I'm not willing to add any amps or subwoofers (weigh and cost too much for me)
I'm looking for a little more bass volume than what the factory crap is giving me. In all honesty though, I just want it to sound decent, no competition sound system for me.
Also, what speakers do you recommend. My price range is ~$250....i know that's not much compared to a lot of you, but that's all I'm willing to spend. Is that going to get me a decent upgrade or is it not even worth it.
Thanks

I would recomend going to www.corvettecaraudio.com he has the plates for the front speaker conversion. He will cut them to fit any size speaker. As far as speakers, for $250.00 you can get a nice set of front and rears. I would recomend a set of 6.5" components up front and just replace the rears with a 5.25" coaxial. For your budget, I would check out Memphis PR series, Polk DB series, or even Sony. Hope that helped.
i agree with you all but with the component suggestion. components; inmho, really need to be amped to see the benefits of those speakers.
Find a great set of coaxials...maybe cdt's or something with a high sensitivity. http://www.cdtaudio.com/classislimcoaxial.htm
at 91db+ they'll take advantage of the h/u's low power amp
Leave the stock rears in, spend the entire $250 on your fronts. It WILL be a good upgade. You will get much better highs than the stock Blose 3.5" twiddler. IMO, shop around for a 6.5" componet set or a 6.5" coaxial that has an adjustable tweeter. Many good brands are out there such as the mentioned CDTs and Polks. The JL TR line and Infinitys are efficent so they too will sound good with just a HU's output.
Best wishes
Personally I have to go against what knewblew says if you arent amping them dont buy 250 dollar components, i think you will benefit more from a nice coaxial in front (more efficient) components are always less efficient and a decent coaxail in back

IMO I don't like the money that components cost without the power necessary to allow them to perform. From most "50watt" headunits you are going to see 14watts rms on average. Which during normal listening you are actually getting about 7-8 watts. This is not enough power to anything outside possibly a tweeter by itself and certainly not enough to allow a nice 6.5" midrange to play well and to its potential.
Infinity perfect 6.1's or the ED 6500's or their new adjustable set (6000's?) might fit the bill and the pricepoint. If you are going to go components I would recommend at least 50 watts RMS to each side. You could look into a 3 channel or 4 channel amp to power the entire system (2 channels to the front and 1 bridged to most likely a 4 ohm load for a sub in the rear) If you really must have rears you could use the 2 rear channels from your HU to power them and still maintain some control over them (fadeability).
I personally have the memphis pr 6.5 components running off of a sony H/U. They dont sound perfect, but they are very efficient and a huge improvement from the oem.
PS- Im not a begginer, Ive been profesionally installing car audio in a custom shop for 4 years or so.
