Information Request: Replacing Bose System with Eclipse Navigation Unit AVN-2454
Has anyone converted thier Bose System to an aftermarket system and been successful integrating it with the Bose Speaker set up? I would like to know what are going to be the issues in doing so, and I am looking into changing the system to the Double DIN Eclipse AVN-2454. I have this system in my supercharged X and it works so good I would like it in my vette.
I heard there are issues with mating aftermarket units to the Bose Sound system? How did you hook your system to the Bose Speakers, and what was the sound clarity/Bass. Did you even use any of the Bose system or did you changeout the whole system?
I changed out my entire system and bypassed all the Bose stuff. One word of caution, make sure to put a load on the old Bose circuit or you'll get an error code, Bogus had to walk me through this one.
not easy, and the instructions are a little long to get it going. basically your going to have to have a good amount of knowledge before tackling this one.
does it have RCA out for front and rear?
can the stock Bose speakers and amps be ran without the Bose receiver or HU? if the Bose does no sound processing from the receiver or HU then it can be done easily(or easier shall i say). If the stock amps do all of the sound processing then your in luck! you also have to look into pre-out amperage and voltage, and also the amount of gain sent from the new HU...to make sure it doesn't distort or toast the stock amps.
my suggestion...by pass them. get a nice 5.25 component set up front and a set of 6.5 subs in back or have someone fab up some mounts to put 8 inch subs in back. your going to need new amps for all four speakers (depending on how much of an audiophile you are depends on how much your looking to spend here...)

The unit does have RCA outs for Rear and Front. Connection E is a line out term that in the install instructions states it is used for a "non fader output. It can be used as a sub woofer terminal if a seperate amplifier with a low base filter is connected." It also has the normal speaker connections. I am going to get a scan of the instruction wiring schematic and post it so you all can see this. I got this system installed in my Supercharged X and it works so good. The navigation is excellent.
I changed out all the speakers as well, made a huge diff. if you really wanna keep the bose for what ever reason let me know there is a wireing harness now for the bose system. I got lucky and used some speakers that i could still use in the same enclosers. not the best of things todo but still have factory look and sounds so much better then the bose system

What engineering genus at GM came up with this? Looking at my sticker I cannot believe we paid $980 for this marvel of disaster. Mine 1989 is in the early stages of death and will probably come out during the winter lay up. Thought you could just pull all the blose junk out and start fresh with power to a new hu and go from there.
What's involved having to put a load old the Bose circuit? What pieces of junk do I have to leave in?
A little clarification on the "load on the bose circuit."
this only effects 1990-1996 Vettes, all models.
The Central Control Module is looking for the factory head unit, and can't. It sets off a display code, thinking that something has broken. the load is a resistor that fakes out the CCM into thinking the head is still there. Easy.
Thanks for correcting where my post should be located, and thanks for the replies. I must be tone deaf, cause I thought my Bose sound sys sounded very good, and was happy with the clarity and the bass of it. I am going to have to research this a little more. I am wondering if someone can provide me what costs were associated with changing out all the speakers, what size speaker wire did you use, problems you incurred, and last thoughts you wish you would have done differently. I know the Eclipse unit was expensive when I first put it in my X, but I can get it much cheaper now on Ebay, and like I said I was very happy with the Navigation, the clearness and brightness of the screen, and the fact it was touch panel making it easier for me to pay more attention to the road. I definately would like to retain the "Factory Look" with whatever I do.
