Need to upgrade the system in my other car. It has 3-way speakers in front and I'm having a hard time finding decent 3-way components to browse. Any recommendations. I need a 5 1/4" set. I'm on a budget as well.

Yep what Scott said. I think the smallest 3 way set I have seen is a 6" 3 way ... many people make 6.5"/3-4"/tweet sets. A friend of mine I just helped out with an install in his M3 got a set of 5.25"/3"/tweet from Rainbow (very solid upper end brand) + a 4"/tweet component set for the rear for like $600. I thought that it was a great deal for the quality of the component. Obviously it would not be a plug and play deal for our cars but easily adaptable.
Could also just piece together the size set that you want from home drivers and have a crossover built to spec.

That's good to know about the rainbow drivers. This is actually for my BMW, lol so that's right on topic. I'm not sure if I can fit 6 1/2" drivers in the kick-panels, but will find out as that would make my life easier. I have not run across any 5 1/4" 3-ways yet, but will look at the rainbows, though they are a little more than I was looking to spend.
I plan on having a 3-way component set up front, a nice 4" replacement for the rear location and 2 12's in the trunk.

I don't know if "budget" will qualify any of these but they are 5 or 5.25 3-way: morel has a 5" Elate 5, Digital Designs (ddaudio.com) ddmb5.2, and DLS (dls.se) UP35.
Do a google search for X year BMW replacement speakers ... found a shop that way that sells kits that include the tools to pull the panels off + speakers and all hardware. They sound pretty damn good in my buddies M3 (2001 I think) I think the rainbow package was a $100 upgrade over the stock replacement package .. can't remember for sure
The thing with 3-ways is the bigger bass driver helps bring the bass forward.
If you are putting these into a C5 door, (or C6 for that matter), I would consider an 8" midbass... with the 4" and 1", it should sound SWEET.
Another thought is to build a 3-way set from components, and have someone wire you up a passive crossover, or, get an active crossover.
Can an 8" fit in the door while still looking stock? Im looking at a 3 way system for sheer volume. I have a vert and I want to listen to music with the top down at 120mph.
With 8"s in the door I could ememinate the 10" sub in the back...hmmmm
You can fit a 3 way with an 8" mid bass in C5 and still have it look stock. I think. I'm in the process of doing it now, just not sure exactly where I'm going to put the tweeter behind the door panel so it's not blocked and well aimed.
Here's a thread of someone who put a 4" mid and 8" mid bass behind the stock door panel. I think they mounted the tweeter in a non stock looking location. Hard to tell as most of the image links are no longer good. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1189073
My install uses a much simpler mount, just a single 3/4" piece of MDF, but it took several rounds of fit and trim and there is barely enough room for everything. I've been taking pics and will post a write up once I actually get some sound out of it. I'm using Kicker SSMB8 mid basses and CDT CL-41 components which have a 4" mid and a 1" dome tweeter.

8" in the door will produce some nice bass but will never beat out a 10" in the back with a correctly built box.
I have a 7" midbass and a 3" dome midrange in my car atm (almost a 4" cutout) and the space in the factory hole is pretty stuffed. I had to build a small MDF trim ring to space the midrange (effectively sits on top of the frame of the 7") and even doing that I still have about 30-35% of the midrange dome blocked behind the factory door panel (the area where the controls for the door sit above the factory grill). I think this winter when I have more time I am going to play some more with speaker locations to try and get them better aimed but I know for sure that an 8" midbass and a 4" midrange will certainly be blocked some and will probably be stuffed into the factory holes (unless they are both pretty small magnet structures)
