Like many folks I wanted to get a GPS system that I could use in all 3 of our vehicles - after looking around for a while I settled on the Lowrance iWay 350. Its screen is large enough to be clearly visible, it has the ability to play MP3s from a compact flash card, and it has an FM transmitter so the music and navigation instructions can be played through the car stereo. Garmin has a unit with these features on it that sells for over 800 - I got the iWay for less than 400.
We used it to go to the cruise in last week and had no problems between MN and KY - the instructions were right on the money (other than an operator error or two). The unit also has an equalizer in it, so I think it actually makes the stock stereo sound better, if that's possible.
I bought a RAM mount that allows me to mount it on the handbrake in the vette - not the most elegant way to do it but very functional.
I just ordered one/ There is a 50 rebate now. I did a search on nextag, and there is a company in Maine that is selling for 358 with a 50 rebate and 10 delivery. Beats Circuit City of $500.
When you play the internal mp3 player the music stops for verbal road directions over the radio. Or you can.get directions over the internal speaker. It has a fm modulator built in. Sounds good. This unit won the 2005 SEMA show. The lowrance iway 500 (5 inch screen) won the 2004 SEMA show. The 350 has a 3.5 inch screen.
I purchased this unit for my drive from DC to San Diego. It was flawless! Still looking for a good place to mount in my '03 C5. Don't want to use velcro...
