Default Radar Detector

Okay so I have two questions. I am about to buy a new radar detector.

1. I think that I am going to end up going with a Passport 8500 X50. Is it the best detector on the market or is the V1 better?

2. I just tinted my windows. They aren't limo tint but they aren't exactly legal either. Will this affect the performance of my radar detector in any way?

Thanks for the help guys.

They are both top notch detectors. The V1 has arrows showing from where the radar is coming and is a nice feature, but it is more bulky than the Passport.
It may affect the performance with tinted windows, because the Passport says not to mount " in heavly tinted areas might obstuct radar antenna or laser lens". Not sure of the V1..good luck,
Rsty

Default PMI Sensoro

No doubt the V1 is the best but it is bulky. I hate having the cord laying all over the place so I have always used the Escort Passport - that is until I bought my '03. I looked for a good rated cordless and the PMI Sensoro Traveller II works great! I bought it on e-bay for around $100. As far as tinted windows...I hope you didn't tint your front window? Just remember to mount it as low as you can. Mine is almost resting on the dash. Radar goes right thru fiberglass so the cops know to shoot a Corvette to get to the first large piece of metal and that is the engine. Good luck!

Default Mount low

Years ago Car & Driver tested detectors using several cars and one of them was a Corvette. According to them and the cop they had on hand, the Vette could only be "shot" low to pick up the engine signature. Radar tends to scatter like a shotgun the farther out it travels therefore the cops aim for your grill. I've been using detectors for over 30 years and have never had a ticket!

That is old technology.. very few agencies use k & X band splatter technology.... you hear about laser.... you have all seen lazers on tv.. the beam is very narrow penitrating and void of splatter..
Lazer technology is very advanced... they know people have detectors.. speed testing equipment is always being upgraded..
Corvettes are as easy to paint as any other car. Radar detectors can save your butt, but they can also make feel invincable.. they actually can be very good at giving you advanced warning that you are about to be ticketed...

Default Lasers

Very true, lasers are quite accurate but the person "shooting" the gun has to be stationary. So the K and Ka band are still the most prevelent due to the fact that they can be used while in a moving vehicle and altho much better than the old X band, they too "scatter". Plus with Laser you have to be within 1500 feet or they are not legal. Needless to say if you get nailed with a laser, get out your checkbook.

In regards to the tint question: the tint in your windows will only degrade reception of the radar detector if the tint is metalic. Ceramic tints will not effect radar reception.
