I'm about to go with the 1/2" MDF for the base of my amp rack. One of my issues, though, is that in the C6 vert with the power top, there is a fabric cover that comes down separating the trunk from the top. It comes down vertically, then slants inward towards the passenger cabin. I wish I had a picture, but my digital camera is out.
The issue is that there isn't a lot of clearance. Therefore, the higher my setup is, the further back into the trunk it will stick out.
In the interest of maintaining trunk space, I was wondering what you think of this setup. How about getting the 1/2" MDF for support, but cutting out around the amps so I didn't lose that 1/2" of vertical height; this might allow me to push the amps back about 1-2" extra. The MDF would be used to support the amp, sliding around it, and it would also house the crossovers, power distribution boxes, and support the facade.

What if you used a flat steel plate for bottom and save even the 1/2 inch then screwed up through the plate into MDF sides, that seems to me to be a thin bottom option and still have a ridgid base
Not a bad idea - with steel, I can get strength with a thinner base. You have a C6 vert, you must know what I'm referring to with regards to the panel in there.
Where would I get steel? Do they have it at, say, Home Depot? Also, can I screw the amps into it, or would I need a nut/bolt arrangement?
you can get steel sheets from a home depot type of place. it is readily available. Looks like a cool idea so far. I agree on the steel instead of mdf if you are trying to save space. You should be able to just use sheet metal screws. The self tapping ones. you'll be good to go.
why dont you just forget about the 'amp rack' enclosure and instead just make a facade out of 1/2 mdf, cut the holes for the amps and x-overs and then secure them to the underside of the facade?
Code:
________ __________ facade
------------------ amp
^ ^ drill up from there
