I'm going to install an Ipod in my car but I really don't know much about Ipods other than I can store MP3 songs on them.

1) Where can I get the best deal on a new Ipod (I just need the mini).
2) I've also seen some gen 2 and gen 3's on Ebay. Anything to worry about with those units?

Thanks

I have the U2 special edition iPod... 20 gig disk space, so that's pretty good space for songs (have about 2500 mp3s and I'm at half capacity). The iPod mini is only 5 gig, so expect about 1000 decent sized songs max. You can get "deals" on iPods almost anywhere now... a couple of my buddies bought theirs on eBay and have had no problems. I think the newer models have a longer battery charge life; I always keep mine charged so that shouldn't be an issue.

I have it hooked up to my car's stock stereo, using a GM AUX input adapter (which allows me to plug an RCA-to-mini jack to the AUX input). So I have an RCA-to-mini jack routed through my front air vent, and my iPod mounted on that (via cell phone holder/iPod holder contraption I rigged together).

It sounds great, and I hardly ever listen to the radio anymore.

good luck with your iPod search.

For deals, I usually check the following sites daily :

Techbargains
FW (checkout the hotdeals forum)

I bought mine through Amazon.com for a decent price (U2 edition, not a mini). Don't know if it's still available, but I remember seeing Target.com (mentioned on Techbargains and FW) having a sale on all iPods (10% off coupon)...

One other thing about Amazon.com, they were offering 30 bux off your first order if you applied for their Visa card; so with no sales tax and free shipping, I got what I thought was a decent deal on my iPod along with another Visa card

Check out iPodLounge for info on the earlier generation iPods

Mark up on ipods is less than 5% so not much dealing available unless they are gen 1 or 2. Buy a 20 gig it is a better deal than the mini.
If you want I can try to locate one for you and save you about 5% and no tax.

Wallyworld = 90 day return policy.
I think they are all pretty much the same price unless you get a web coupon from someone.

Interesting. Read on one of the pages in a customer review that the ipod is the bose of personal players. . . They state that iAudio is a better device, as it can support both mp3 and wma.
Is there any advantage to one format over the other?
I want a player but dont know what to buy.

Ozzie,

I've never been a big fan of Apple and Steve Jobs. I've read the reviews on other mp3 players and you're right, there are other players out there making products that compete with the iPod on price, value, and feature content.

With that aside, the two factors that sold me on the iPod were: aftermarket support for direct connection into the factory stereo AND ease of use. The iPod uses a Click Wheel that is located on the front part of the unit. The learning curve for this Click Wheel is very minimal!! Once you get the hang of it, it is simply the best all-in-one controlling mechanism on the market (in my most humble opinion ) You control virtually everything on the unit from this single point. Some like it, some don't...for me, I find it very easy to navigate my way through my playlists and songs when I'm in my Z.

I looked at the Creative Labs players and definitely would have considered one if there was aftermarket support for a DIRECT-CONNECT solution into the factory head unit.

This has my attention: iAudio X5 20 GB Portable Multimedia Player, son to be realeased. $285 at Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...onics&n=507846

I would be using it on my motorcycle for the most part, replacing my Rio. The video would be great to bore people to death with pictures of my 5 grandkids, which are naturally the cutest in the world!
