My custom stereo pics
I don't know why I haven't posted these before, but since this always seems to be a popular subject, I decided to share what I have done.
The headunit, amp, and cd changer are all Kenwood. No particular reason for that, except that the cd changer was the right dimensions to put it where I wanted to, and the amp was also the right dimensions with all the features I wanted; I had to be able to still use my rear window tray as well as needing an electronic crossover built-in. I cut the bezel using a Dremel, and I filled the holes with bondo. The only rear speaker is the 8" passive Bazooka tube, and the front speakers are a MTX Road Thunder 5 1/4" component set with the woofer in the door, the tweeter in the stock dash location, and the crossover in the kick panel. The amp is a 4 channel, with two channels driving the front, and the remaining two bridged mono @ 4 ohms driving the Bazooka tube. Plain and simple, this system flat out rocks. I used to compete in car audio compitions which then led to a job at a high end car audio shop as an installer and designer, and the best sounding systems are always the simplest with the fewest speakers. People for the most part put too many speakers into their cars in their quest for audio nirvana. If you think about it, how many speakers(drivers) are in a pair of quality speakers? Usually 6, 2 tweeters,2mids,and two woofers. There is always one particular car from the pro audio division that comes to my mind, and that is Richard Clark's Grand National. That car had 6 speakers, and is the only pro audio car to retire undefeated. You can read about it here: Richard Clark's Grand National

Forget the stereo. Your interior/door panels look so clean, and bright, and new. Did you just go back in time and purchase a new C3 ? I want to see pics of the entire car.

Your car looks so fresh, clean, and well-presented...except for that ungly head unit area. Go buy the DIN console so that thing can sit flush!

Thanks for the kind words guys. The interior looks so new because it is! I just finished a body off resto, so thats the reason it looks so fresh. My car already had power windows, so the door speakers are in the stock window crank location, I had to do a minimal amount of trimming to fit them in. I also obviously dyed the speaker grills to match the interior, you wouldn't believe how many people think they are factory stock! As for the headunit, those adapters weren't around when I cut my bezel, maybe one day I will change it out, but honestly it doesn't really bother me. The amp and the sub are both screwed to threaded aluminum backing plates that I rivited to the fiberglass.

CG, Is your center bezel metal, similar to the original, or ABS plastic?

That picture above is from the Vette Specialists website. The PO switched out the radio to a Custom Autosound unit, but it still has the original console. My plans for next winter include replacing the stereo with a modern in-dash CD player and real speakers. Since I don't have any intention of cutting apart a piece of 40 year old trim, I will get one of those DIN-sized replacements and shelf the original.

Bruce it looks great...what is the max. depth in the location you have the mids? i have thought about that spot for mids but was not sure how much depth there is in that area....

Mike, if I remember correctly there was about 2 1/2" of space.....the window track is the limiting factor. I will be removing the drivers door panel to adjust the window in the near future, so I can measure for you then.

Thanks again for the kind words.......as for the adapter plates for the headunit, like I already said, it doesn't bother me the way it is now, and to be honest, I have seen those plates in person, and I didn't really think they looked all that great. To each his own I guess!
