Default Audiophiles: C5 glass top muddies bass

...I was doing some tweaking of my car stereo tonight since I spend approx 2 hours in my car each day to/from work. I noticed this, for anybody with a sub (or maybe even the OEM system), play some material with bass fairly loudly, and hit PAUSE on your deck. Then, listen for an after ringing like an undamped bass drum. I first thought it was a body panel that was ringing like a bell. Then I realized it was the glass top. Dampen the top with your hand and try again. The bass is much cleaner and defined.

I wonder what can be done short of using the solid top. It sure wouldnt look good to put Dynamat up there. I was thinking of this- it may detract from the cleanliness of the top but what about a thin strip of reinforcing metal/wood/plastic coated with some sort of rubber added going down the inside center of the top to act as a brace to cut down this ring.

I have yet to try it out when driving down the road but if I can hear it while sitting still I bet I can hear it while moving, especially with those with sound quieting mods.

PS This applies only to coupe glass top owners with C5's. Not sure if the C6's/C4's have the same phenomena.

I was rolln' around today with my fiberglass top in my C4, but I dynamatted it. So I didnt hear anything like that. I too was messn around with my stereo and had the top off, cause its a friggn miracle that it was 70 degrees in Kentucky today.

Ive never fooled around with a top on a C5, but I cant imagine dynamatting it with some fabric over it would look bad

Yes, the C4 glass top rings with both music and with muffler noise. I put on some self-adhesive foam insulation and then covered it with fabric. Looks nice, stopped the ring, and saves my brain from the hot desert sun.

My 84 has the glass top and it resonates bad. I like the sunroof affect though, so I learned to live with it.
