Well, after a couple of months of me and steve from subthump, we came up with a box to install in place of the storage compartment ring on 84-96 c4's. Now realize this is a prototype box, and steve isnt officially making these yet, but im sure he could be pursuaded to make some in the future. We used my car as a test (since I dont live too far from Steve, only about 300 miles aways) so shipping stuff back and forth to him wasnt a big deal. Ok, on to the pics.
First, I took out the storage ring out of the car. It was 10 1/4-20 bolts around the frame. This was to get a good look at how much space I had to play with, and what the external dimensions I had to play with.
Initially, I was going to fab my own box out of fiberglass and MDF, so cardboard was fashioned to see much room I had. Then, I made a fiberglass enclosure from the fitting fixture and proceeded to make a fiberglass/mdf combo box. But in the middle of it I happened to start up a conversation with Steve at subthump via email, and we decided to work on a box that he could sell to people. So I sent off my mold to steve along with some ACAD drawings so he understood the maximum outter dimensions of an enclosure for the stoarge compartment.
In a few days, and a couple of phone calls, I got back a enough parts to assemble the box, and mount it in the car, then I sent it back to steve. This is a bunch of pictures of me fitting it in my car, and the skinless box.
So I packed it up and sent it to steve so he could make final measurements and notes, and he sent me back this :
Steve elected to put some generic grey carpet on it, since it was pointless to try to colormatch my grey 1986 original interior. It was just to make it a bit better looking. I sent him a bunch of C4 carpet samples, so he has the right colors now. Remember, this was just a prototype.
So, on to ploping it in my car for some pics. You could easily add this, it slipped on into the car very easy.
DAMN, my L7 wont fit!!! oh well, that will be for the next install here real soon.
ok, on to mounting the subwoofer and amps. For my test, im using a Crystal CSe SVC 10" sub. Its speaker depth is 5" exactly, and I think I could of got a deeper sub in there.
Here is the speaker, with me using some rope caulk since the sub didnt have a rear seal. For 3 bucks at walmart, it was a great idea.
and on to wiring and mounthing
dont forget mister Pollyfill ! he's your dampening friend.
see next post (damn forum wont let me post over 5 linked images) GRRRR
OK - now to mount the sub, and a couple of amps. I had two SAS monoblock 500 watt amps laying around, finally a use for them. (besides collecting dust).
OK OK, the grille looks bad, but its all I had at the time. Really it was put on so I wasnt clumsy and drop a screwdriver in the cone.
oops, forgot i needed to amp my 6x9's (even though I hate rear fill too in a vette, but I had the extra amp, so what the hell. Out of room though, had to go up for space, so got some allthread, and made some dual amplifier standoffs.
well, time to throw it in the car.
Didnt fit too well with the original carpet. Im going to have to replace it soon anyways due to 15 years of sunfading, so all of this has to come out anyways. How'd it do? Great. Steve's sealed box was nice and tight, so tight that when you pushed down on the speaker cone, it took a second or so for the cone to come to dead center agian. I love a tightly sealed enclosure! The sub still is a bit overpowered and is not really a sealed sub anyways, but it was the only 10" sub I had around the house to play with. Im ordering a replacement tonight for it - something a bit more serious, which really will use the amps I installed. But the crystal is a good SQ sub. They dont sell this model anymore however, they have been superceeded by the CMP's. My other Crystal sub is toast, after it lost a fight with winISD's signal generator. All of this is going to come out soon anyways, when I put my L7's in.
So, you'll have to ask Steve when he is going to offer this. In emails, he tells me he is totally swamped, so I dont know of availability. And, remember, this is me screwing around, this isnt a serious install at all. But ive gotten so many private mail about these boxes, I had to throw somthing out. There will be a final actual install once I get the right equipment and materials to finish it properly. I just cant justifiy ripping out all my interior - YET
looks good but imho i'd drop that paper towel tube
soo...how's it sound?
The paper towel tube is our new custom porting system.
Well, its got plenty of power to it, so the amps didnt have to work too hard to push this little guy.. It sounds loud and clear. Its no DB drag car, but it sounds nice and punchy. Low, low bass is really not great, but thats due to the sub, not the box. Crystal CSe's do better in a 1.5 ^3 box vented, not sealed. So bottom end was sticky but kickdrums were nice and punchy. Its about what I expected. This box comes in about .7 without driver. Its a tiny box, but it wasnt meant to be anything beyond adding a sub for bottom end - and im replacing the sub in a couple of days with another brand, and im going to port it into the storage cavity, then behind the seat. Im undecided about that route still.
I did finally end up disconnecting my 6x9's though, for the soundstage kept being pulled to the back. So I really could of done without one of the amps. I'll probably pull all of it tomorrow.
the box looks good but i would definately do something about the amps, maybe mount them on the back wall? or mount them on the floor and build a false floor over them so they stick out so much
That looks really good man! I built a fibreglass box for a 10 once for that area, but never used it. I have my crossovers mounted there now. I think I might go with the 8's in the 6x9 locations, since I recently bought new carpet and that setup unfortunately doesn't have great provisions for carpet, but if I were to do it again, that system would be in the cards. Nice!

Oh i totally agree, they're not going to be there long. I just needed somthing for them to mount on temporarily. There most likely going to be put on the back wall similar to your monitor 1's in your car. But I like your monitor 1's waaay better, since they're squared off and easliy flush mounted. Unfortunatly im rather tall, so I dont have any room behind the seats either, otherwise that would be my next mounting locale. As it is, i look like friggn Tom Seleck did in those old magnum PI shows, when he's driving that ferrari...
This was no real install. It was just to show the box fits fine and is functional. all of it comes out tomorrow!
I may make an adapter for my test box from subthump to put 8's in it just for the hell of it, so when I do, i'll post something about it. RIght now, I just paid for a new 10" subwoofer for this box, cause I really wanted somethinig besides this damn Crystal CSe I have. So yestereday I paid for a Onyx Ls10 which should do fine in this enclosure. I'll have pic's up when I get it done. I cant EVER do anything cause of the damn cold weather here in Kentucky, since I have no garage and I have no friends with a garage. Wait, I have no friends either I just moved to where I am now, and I dont know anyone in the city at all. In my old town I had use of 4 lifts and 3 paint booths I could use at any time. I was totally spoiled.
snoop thats my ad sorry about that,i have been selling some of steves boxs and was waiting for the boxs to come out,i talked to him about it and he said you were not interested sell them so i ran some,i got the box and im getting pics this weekend with them in my vette but i just took that pic off steves site,if it bothers you i can remove the pic untill i get mine up
thanks ronnie
