[ANSWERED] Will the C8 be running in AFM mode by default?
#22
I thought it was a very informative article. The approach to close the valves so the pistons act as air springs is a elegant solution for the windage loss other manufacturers encounter. I don’t know if I’m just lucky but my Z06/07A8 goes in and out of four-cylinder mode completely smooth. I’ve even asked passengers if they could notice it and they cannot. I do think because of my heavy foot on the gas that it doesn’t go into four-cylinder mode very often. But during a coast downhill it will go into four cylinder mode but I only know this when I’m watching the indicator on the dashboard. In my car it is impossible to know whether it’s in four-cylinder or eight cylinder mode. If it saves a couple of drops of gas for the next full throttle acceleration that’s good. My Porsche would stop the engine at a light and that would be unacceptable and a Corvette because I like to listen to the beautiful V-8 engine idle while I’m at a light. The dual clutch transmission now will allow me to pull both paddles and use up a few of those extra drops of gas I saved in 4 cylinder mode to rev the engine and listen to its glorious sound.

Geez, the people on this forum can turn anything into a pissing match. I read that the average age of Corvette owners is about 60, but that's hard to believe. The average age of forum members seems closer to 6 than 60.

You guys will argue about anything. Not productive and really petty. I appreciate the Lead Engineer at GM taking the time to explain this. If you are so busy that taking a couple of minutes to read the answer screws up your day, then maybe you are too busy to be here at all.

I completely understand how the Government dictated to the Automobile Manufacturers what they had to do to increase fuel economy.... CAFE for short....Hence the AFM. At least in the Corvette you can disable it by going into the Manual Mode....And with Rev-Matching with the Auto Tranny and the paddles it is almost like shifting with a manual. After my Tranny Flush with the new fluid I ALWAYS use the paddles and I really and truly haven't noticed any difference in gas mileage....
we only have global warming and shitty air becias use the government profits from the taxes they impose on consumptuion- blame the government

My sincere appreciation to Tadge for taking time in his busy schedule - under no obligation to us - to provide more info than just what was asked. I, for one, would much rather have his participation here than not.

You will never get back the 2 minutes (or 5 or 10...) you spent reading Tadge's answer. He told you how it works, how it differs from other makers, it's benefits, and how to avoid it. And for HIS time, which is at least as valuable as YOURS, he gets a dick remark. Amazing.
