Default 08 Z brake lights stay on????

2008 Z06 brake lights come on and stay on, the active handling message on DIC comes on and cruise then kicks off ( if engaged) due to brake lights on. been to local dealer 4 times and no joy (fix)...anyone have this issue or heard of it and the cause or fix for the problem? thanks, mike in Abilene Texas

I don't know about any tie to the active Handling message, but brake lights usually stay on because of a stuck position switch which is usually under the dash and activates when you push the pedal. Look around the brake pedal and see if you can find the stitch.. If the plunger on the switch has gotten stuck that would keep the brake lights on and may send a signal to the control system that the brakes are on even though they may not be.

I'm sure the dealer replaced the switch at least 3 times now, right. Must be a short in the wires before the switch.

I'm sure the switch/sensor has been replaced and/or re-calibratied. Rewiring the wires from the Brake Pedal Position Sensor to the BCM may be fix.

Mike,

I'm sorry you are having this issue. Could you PM me your information (name, number, address, VIN, current mileage, and involved dealer)?

I'm having the same issue in my 05 Z51, 145k miles. I've already had the brake light switch and steering wheel position sensor replaced by the dealer. Worked great for about 3 months. Interesting (scary) thing is when I press the brake petal the brake lights go out, only to come back on about 3 seconds after I release the brake petal. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Usually the failure is the result of a stuck brake pedal switch. I don't know if this failure is related to anything on any other GM vehicles, however, there is a related recall on 2008 Malibus where there is a potential for a short inside the BCM which causes the rear brakes to come on, upset stability control, traction control and several other things. I just got the recall notice on my Malibu today informing me the parts were available.

LT1Driver.....Ok, mine has been fix and the culpret was some bad pins in the high speed data bus. It is the two large blue connectors on the BCM in the passengers floorboard. Took me almost two years and a lot of heartache to finaly get this fixed. If you had the A/C on when that happened it also more than likely cut the A/C off and all the gages were dead. If not that is how the problem progresses. If this happens and you can open the floorboard and press gently down on the two blue connectors. If the car comes back to life(gages working) this is your issue. They will have to be repined, there are 80 pins in each of the connectors, took the tech at my local dealership 2 full days to do the job. Have driven 1K miles so far without an issue.

My base 05 I noticed was doing that tonight but the brake lights working in reverse is dependent upon the service traction control light being on. When it's off (my service traction control light is intermittent right now) it goes back to normal so it's not a brake pedal sticking or anything
