Default A4 code P1810.....TRANNY BLOWN..

The P1810 code showed up on my display recently. The car ran as if the tranny was slipping and then catching for a short distance and then a shuddering feeling and noise. From looking at my 99 service manuals, the pcm is supposed to be commanded to D2 line pressure. It definately feels like the car is leaving in 2nd gear from a dead stop. The temperature also went through the roof to 266F while only driving a mile or less. Has anybody had this problem before? The dealer wants to pull out the tranny and look for a problem at a cost of $900. I would think he would replace the transmission fluid pressure (TFP) manual valve position switch first before pulling the tranny.
thanks
john :cry

You are on the right track ;) Check out this TSB...

Tech - Service Engine Soon (SES) Light Illuminates (Repl Switch Assy) #99-07-30-013

Service Engine Soon (SES) Light Illuminates, DTC P1810 Set (Replace TFP Switch Assembly)
1999 Cadillac Escalade

1998-99 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette

1998-99 Pontiac Firebird

1998-99 Chevrolet and GMC C/K, M/L, S/T, G Models

1998-99 Oldsmobile Bravada

1998-99 Holden Commodore

with Hydra-Matic 4L60-E Transmission (RPO M30)

Condition
Some customers may comment about the Service Engine Soon light illuminating. The PCM will have stored a Diagnostic Trouble Code P1810, Transmission Fluid Pressure Manual Valve Position (TFP) Switch assembly circuit malfunction.

Cause
Debris from aluminum shavings, bronze material, and certain clutch material may cause the pressure switches in the TFP switch assembly to stick or electrically short out.

Correction
A new TFP switch assembly with a plastic shield has been released. The plastic shield is designed to protect the pressure switch from debris. This improvement will reduce the likelihood of a DTC P1810. This product change went into production on April 8, 1999 (Julian date 098). The existing TFP switch assembly remains relatively unchanged except for the addition of the new shield, creating a new part number for the assembly. The shield fits over the existing TFP switch assembly and is not sold separately.

Follow diagnostics for the P1810 Diagnostic Trouble Code in the Transmission Section of the appropriate Service Manual. If the diagnostics indicate that switch replacement is necessary, use the correct switch P/N as listed below.

Wow, great response. I hope that this is correct and no other damage exists. I will print this out and the TSB and give it to the dealer tomorrow.

Thanks,
john

Default Re: BLOWN TRANNY

It turns out that the code for the TFP was a result of my tranny grenading. Some of the debris got stuck in the valve and caused the code. Since warranty is covering the work and I can't afford a bulletproof tranny right now, I'm going to settle for a simple rebuild. I was somewhat curious if anyone knows of a local supplier of the stronger gears and shaft and other components in the tranny, that would sell the individual parts for the rebuild. If I can get the upgraded hardware soon, I would have them installed, but lose future warranty of course.
thanks,
john
