Electric Choke vs. Hot Air Choke
What is the consensus on a Electric vs. Hot Air Choke? Need to replace two of my choke tubes, which will run me as much as an electric choke. Benefits of the electric? Draw backs?

So far my electric choke has been nice. Car idles nice for warming up without excessive fumes or stalling. Have not used it that long so no info on dependablility or longevity.

I would go electric. Definitely an upgrade, but frowned upon by purists that
may want to retain originality. I never put an electric choke on a Quadrajet -
assuming you still have the original carb. They've worked perfectly for me
on Holleys - and now on an Edelbrock.
You will need to run one wire, and patch it into a circuit that gets power
with the ignition on. The unit will need to be adjusted for pull-off and
for idle speed. The directions that come with a kit should be sufficient
for you to get through it OK. New choke tubes will avoid these extra steps.

I put an electric choke on my '79 with a QJet. Very reliable -- closes choke much sooner than hot air did, which is a good thing. Picked it up at OReilly's for 36 bucks.

You will need an electric choke if you change to an intake and/or heads that do not have a heat passage. May as well buy one now in case of modifications.

Dave...question about elec chokes...I just hooked mine up yesterday. If the wire carries 12 v to the choke...what varies it? Does the computer vary the voltage to open and close? thanx

I wondered that myself and I also see my choke will set even with no power to it so I figure it is heat sensitive and the elec actual pulls it open.

I've been running a Q-Jet electric choke conversion for about 1 1/2 years now. The only problem I had is that it would quit working every now and then. I had 12V to it, but it still wouldn't open. I think I finally fixed it by removing the washer between the electric assembly and the housing. I am pretty sure my problem was a flaky ground and that should have fixed it.
The choke is always supplied with 12v. When it gets the 12v, the metal coil will heat up causing it to open the choke.

My electric choke has 12V full time (battery), plus 12V switched. And there's a tiny little black box that bolts to the intake manifold. I assume it's some sort of temperature sensor, and it controls the current going to the electric choke heater...and voila! It works!

Sorry for not looking sooner, guys.
As stated by others, mine has a constant heater - and the bimetal coil gets heated
and eventually pulls the choke off. Any other heat source would effect it,
but under normal conditions - not an issue.
Interesting to see one that apparently senses the manifold temp - and
adjusts accordingly. Huh - never seen one.
