Default HAS anywon installed a Comp Cam XE262 or Crane powermax 272 0n a big/block ?

I will be doing a cam change on my big/block as a winter project, looking for a fat & broad tourque curve & 1300RPM / 5600RPM driving range, with occasional burst to 6000 rpm ,keeping 3.08 rear gears ..... a short duration cam with good lift was my basic goal,,,, was strongly considering XE262 ...factors are my 427 has been decked & My valves are 2.19'' intake & 1.88'' exhaust, The pistons are TRW 2300 F , domed , not fly cut for larger valves....therfore... dont want to exceed 525'' lift.... comp ratio approx 9.5 to 1, again the XE 262 fit the bill ... but Crane has complicted things with the receint advertising on the Powermax 272 , in comparison to the XE 262...........noting 15 more HP & broad fatter tourque......in comparison to the XE262...has anyone installed eiter cam in a big/block ??  my 66 is a street driver :) Help

Here I am, :jester

I have the XE-262 Grind in my 454. It's a Good cam with noticeable idle and power off idle. I think many times people over cam their car. "Bigger has to better philosophy." Without taking into consideration: gearing, compression, Intake and exhaust flow potential, stall speed(auto), and primary usage for car. I will try and get a sound clip up soon

LS5 - 71 is correct, some times people overcam and lose the lower end torque. I have the XE274, which came highly recommended by two friends in town that "know their stuff" as well as two folks at Comp Cams. However, I have a 3.70 rear end and an M-20. It definitely has a noticeable lope at idle but wraps up very fast over 1800 rpm's. It has good torque through the whole upward range. And, I can take it to 6000 if I'll let the MSD go that far. I have the same pistons as you, also. I am decked .010 as well as a stroked crank of .015. However, I do have open chamber head 336781, which all, supposedly, puts my CR at 9.75. It starts well, idles nice, and runs very well. With your 3.08, the 262 would probably be best. Good luck.

LS5-71, what is your redline ? , trans & rear gear ratio ?....Crane has been running ads lately comparing the XE 262 TO Crane powermax H-272 Crane states 15 or so more HP & Tourque up through entire range up to 6000 rpm, Chevy high perf magazine issue Sept 2001 has some good reading on cam & engine combos.....they state a 350 small block with a XE 262 or a crane 272 would produce 390/395 hp, againj on a small block...ref Crane 272 216/228 @0.050 tappet lift & .454/480 valve lift.................................... ................, xe262 218/224 & .462 /469 lift, my question which would have the most & fattest tourque curve...... on a street engine , without headers., with 2 1/2" ..factory side exhaust , thanks for your reply :flag

I've been a Crane cam only guy for many years. The 272 power max is the start of the hp makers. What you have to understand is. They are designed to make the dynamic compression ratio high.

You see in the description the recomended compression ratio? If your motor is on the upper end with what ever your static compression is. Just plan on premium unleaded and your going to be on the edge of detonation. I have used the 272. but I would recomend the 278.

For what you want, XE262 is a good min. for your setup. Different w/ more C.I. You could go up a step if you wanted for rpm.

Yo,
I have basically a bone stock 71 LS5 (50,000 mi.), TH400, 3.08 Posi, The only thing I've updated is the Cam, valvetrain and thinner head gasket. The motor will pull to 6000 in 1st or 2nd gear no problem. I've never attempted in 3rd yet. The most important aspect of revving any motor whether it's a 283 or 502 is the valvetrain. Without the proper setup, valve float will set in and bye, bye piston. I've seen motors pickup 4 inches of vacuum at idle just by installing the proper valve springs. I think the XE-262 is the biggest cam recomended by Comp Cams with cast iron manifolds. The larger grinds suggest headers and free flowing intake.

Hope this helps
