Default How much is this '84 worth?

Approx 35000 miles
4+3 is shot & stuck in reverse
Engine runs fine
Paint is fair with some peeling (black)
Interior is fair to good (gray)

Any guesstimates? I know the description isn't too detailed, so just a rough ballpark would be good.

Thanks!
Dave

Without seeing it I'd say $3500.00

Wow. That low, huh? I didn't realise a rough 84 would drop that low. Then again, I suppose the 4+3 & the Crossfire don't help value too much.

it really is only worth about 3500. If it had a god tranny i would say 5,000-6K...

I was told by the guy i bought my vette from to stay away from the 84 crossfire. I don't know why but i saw a chaep one that didn't look bad. White w/red int yuck! to the red interior. I would think being the first of the new body style it would hold a collector value. First of the series, But i have no idea that you could pay as low as 3500. I knew a guy selling a 78 body for $3500 no engine or trans.

Why would I jump at an engine-less '78 for $3500 but the same amount for a broken 84 makes me hesitate? Is the crossfire and the 4+3 THAT bad or am I just tainted?

The 4+3 would worry me unless I could verify exactly what was wrong. The crossfire would not deter me. I haven't has a problem in 3+ years of ownership.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the crossfire is good if it runs, but it isn't exactly the most optimum starting point for performance mods, right?

There is nothing wrong with the crossfire. In stock form, it has less power than the tpi cars, but can be made to run just as quick. But you will have to do some fabricating, as the aftermarket doesn't support the crossfire. Remember, HP=$$

The system is as reliable as tpi if not more so.

If ya wanna make one go fast, go here.
http://www.crossfire.webhop.net/

IMHO, the 84 is a tremendous value. If you don't race to begin with and just want a nice cruiser, it has all the power you will ever need at a bargain price. It has the drop dead gorgeous looks of the C4, and 290 ft lbs of torque ain't bad, and it is very fast off the line. You can port the intake, bore the throttle bodies, change cams and heads, upgrade the ECM etc if you want to exceed 300 HP. There are several guys on the CF forum who can eat a stock (and even modified) L98 for lunch. As for the 4+3, it is a POS in the 84. But if you can get it for $3500,. go for it. Find a new trans from a later C4 with the 4+3, change to the 6 speed, or have it rebuilt.

I bought my 84 with 25k miles on it 6 months ago. It's also black, graphite interior, and yes, it also had the OD go South. I paid $4200 for it and I think I oughta be arrested for grand theft. You can see pictures of it on my website. I'm hopefully 1-2 weeks from getting her running and I guarantee I will be able to get at least 10k for it if not more. Any 80's C-4 in good shape that has under 50k miles fetch $$$, crossfire or not. I wouldn't pay more than $3500 since everything else isn't perfect. If it were, then I'd pay more if it was just the tranny that was bad.

Dave, I've been shopping here in Cali, and here's my opinion, for whatever it's worth:

I just looked at a thoroughly thrashed '84/automatic/Z51/leather interior/full power coupe. It needs everything! The guy wants $3,000 for it, and I may go for it, despite the fact that it also has 209,000 miles on it. The cars runs great despite its age, and the R4 tranny is freshly rebuilt. It looks like hell, but if I can get it past California's Smog Gestapo, I'll be able to drive it. I've also got leads on three other cars in the $3,500 range.

What I'm trying to get at is, that 4+3 is a killer. You can get a running, driving automatic for as low as $3,000. With this specimen, you'll be in for a ton of transmission work (and it could be an ongoing thing; 4+3s aren't noted for their reliability, even when new). Unless someone knows something I don't (which is entirely possible), the only viable tranny swaps for one of these cars is a ZF six-speed (big bucks) or a 700-R4 (reliable, but not a stick shift).

I wouldn't cough up more than $2,500...much more, and you can start off with a car that has a functioning transmission.

As I said, that's my opinion...and as Dennis Miller says, I could be wrong.

Thanks guys. A colleague of mine is considering making the guy an insanely low offer for the car ($1000 range). I've never seen the car personally and he described it today. Sounds like it's be a decent car for his plan...fix it, drive it for a summer, then sell it.

Thanks!

This is what I would do! Buy the car at a low price than transform it into a wicked vette :D Here's how I would do it...Get a '96 body change over kit($1,500) than install a 350 smallblock with a nice cam and a Tunnel Ram intake with 2-4 barrel carburetors and different transmission 350 or 400 TH :D  Custom Paint some nice Wheels  NO Computer!!!!!

Nothing wrong with an 84. Have owned mine since 86. Still runs great. but it is very expensive to bring up to good condition if you get one needing lots of work. A complete interior will run you $2000.00. A top notch paint job $2000-3500.00. To replace alll the weather striping, $1000.00. So a C4, any C4 needing a lot of cosmetic repair can be a very expensive hobby. Just ask my wife. But an 84 at the right price, I would not shy away from it.

4+3 is about $1500-1800 to rebuild, but once that's done it will last with good care (regular fluid and filter change, plus I don't use mine for around town on a regular basis, highway driving only, & in town when I forget to turn it off) If the car is otherwise in good shape it's probably a good bargain at $3500, but usually I found cars with a big problem like this has lots of other problems too :(

That sounds like a pretty good deal. True, the CrossFire did not have as much power as the TPI, but the X-fire cars seem to have a much lower price and not THAT much lower performance. JMHO, but it seems to be a good, economical choice. BTW, I LOVE mine. It has more than enough power for my needs.

The crossfire had MORE power than the early TPI, that's why GM sabotaged the intake manifold by adding 1/2" of aluminum to the runners. 3 or 4 hours with a die grinder will fix that. I can outrun any stock L98 in our club with the few mods that I have. See my sig.

Those are some good times even for an L98. What mods did you perform?
