Default My custom 402ci twin 62/65 lives!

Like the title says!

I never did a thread, because honestly I wouldn't keep up with it and didn't want to drag it out. The last time my FRC had a running engine in it was at the end of October last year. Since then, I sold off everything and built the 402TT. Rundown for setup as follows:

Engine:
- 402ci LQ9
- Callies Dragonslayer crank
- Callies Ultra H rods
- Custom Mahle turbo pistons, -30cc dish 2618 alloy
- Double roller
- Hand ported LSA heads, with Manley valves
- BT max pressure springs
- 1.7 YT roller rockers
- Custom Comp LSL lobe cam: 243/251 .624"/.624" 116LSA adv. 4deg
- LS2 pan
- ARP studs everywhere, 1/2" in the heads
- LS3 intake manifold
- LS2 TB
- DSTECK custom 3-bar MAP (LS3 fitment with LS1 plug, and 3-bar with positive offset for C5 pcm)

Fuel System:
- FAST rails
- Aeromotive fpr
- -10AN feed
- -6AN return
- Bosch 1200cc injectors from Arun
- DW301 fuel pumps, 1 in each tank with room for another in each
- 40A hotwire to each pump
- -10AN balance line across tanks

Turbo setup:
- Custom twins mounted similarly to TTix
- 62/65 Turbonetics turbos with .82a/r turbine housing and B-cover
- 38mm Tial wastegates
- 50mm Tial BOV's
- Treadstone TRTTC9 intercooler
- 3" downpipes
- Kooks race bullets in catalyst location
- All custom hot/cold side piping
- Turbosmart E-boost controller
- K&N filters sized to fit

Misc:
- Centerforce DYAD clutch
- Dewitts shortened radiator
- remote oil cooler
- Converted to CTS-V a/c compressor for more room in front of PS turbo
- Hinson short motor mounts
- QT bellhousing

Like any custom build this deep, I have plenty of clean up work ahead of me and still have to finish building the rest of the exhaust out the back.

I'm sure there is plenty i'm leaving out here, just really stoked to see all this junk work! No debt in any of this, and working on it when I can.

Awesome job Jon!!

Make sure everyone knows you re-fabbed most of the piping, headers and wastegate placement on your own design and you welded it!

1000rwhp for sure... Gonna be a nasty nasty ride.

Glad to see its finally coming together, you've been thrashing on it for a while..

Thanks guys. I'll post up some pictures tonight after work.

Yea Alan, the only thing i didn't weld was the manifold logs. All the rest was me. Cold side piping, downpipes, etc. I bought a tig and taught myself to weld to do this.

All,
I'm a few months shy of 58 and have been building engines since I was 15. I have watched Jon completely gut the entire engine, fuel, spark, cooling and drivetrain in this '99 FRC and rebuild or replace everything in it by hand. No kits, no help other than his own concept, drive and intelligence. One out of a million would ever try this on their own in my opinion. Jon's persistence after many nights to 2:00 am after work has paid off in a very big way. I'm damned proud to call him my son! Congratulations son

Nice to see you passed this disease down to your son. I guess we can officially call it a congenital syndrome. I got my affliction in a similar fashion.
Great work Jon! What TIG did you buy?

+1

When I was at Jon's house dropping off and picking up my brand new/custom built diff he did for me(great job BTW), I checked out his car, he really improved the design on the TTiX style kits... His own design and fab work is pretty impressive for someone just starting out building these things.

I can't wait to see him throw some serious power down...

Allot of us prior (don’t want to call us old) shade trees pass down our passion to our sons (and sometimes daughters). Great build and congrats…except for one thing…that A&M koozi just sucks on this build…. JK! welcome to the SEC!!!

Thanks for all the comments guys. I haven't been getting email notifications for some reason. Been a long, short work week. Didn't get back from Cleveland until 11:30 or so last night. Not much sleep since Saturday. Will absolutely post up photos tonight when I finally get back to my computer!

Dad, what are you doing out of the ZR1 forums! Haha, thanks for the words and you are definitely to blame for my sickness.

Bret, it's an Eastwood tig. 200amp, ac/dc unit. Didn't want to spend more than that for a first machine. On about my 9th 125cf argon tank now... And much better then I was when I was on my first. Anyone doing this, buy gas lense collets only and at least a size 8 body. You'll thank me later.

BMFvette, it's my Dad's koozie and his video. I went to Texas Tech!

Lots of things I would change if doing this again. Lessons learned for the next build ... I think I will wrap this one up though and enjoy it for a while.

Alright, here are some of the pictures taken through the build. The turbo manifolds and downpipes were purchased from another persons project. At first I was going to keep it as is, and ordered the turbos to suit (also had mock turbos to use in the mean time). Later on, I decided to bring the wastegates to the top directly off the manifold in hopes it would better relieve exhaust pressure to control boost. I didn't go back and buy new turbine housings, but rather just plated off the hole. The 5-hole flanges really are a pain in the *** to negotiate under there. Since I really don't need the 5-bolt any longer, I may convert over to v-band in the future. Or just add another wastegate if I still can't control boost, .

Let the picture dump begin

hot pipes originally:

wastegates relocated:
