I was going 10 mph over the speed limit in my C6 on a local 7-lane highway through town. In my city, they are pretty lenient and as long as you are within 10 mph of the speed limit, they normally do not bother you and it is common for the LEO's to pass you when you are doing 5 mph over. If you get to 15 mph over, there is a good chance you will get a ticket. It is very common for people to exceed the limit.

It was still dark and 16 F outside. There was no one in front of me, and I had the cruise control set, just to make sure I didn't go too fast. I was not paying attention to who was behind me, but I had just passed the jail. I often see LEO cars around there, obviously.

All of a sudden I notice blue lights immediately behind me. I was in the right hand lane already, so I just slowed down to let him pass. However, he turned his lights off after about 1 second. I reset my cruise to the speed limit and all was good. He did not stop me. It was a county sheriff car.

I guess I will set my cruise a few mph lower in the future when driving around the jail.

All those stories about red Corvettes being ticket magnets are not true!

You were lucky. I got my first ever ticket in the corrupt state of NJ on Sunday. No traffic on the road except a slow old SUV in front of me that I thought was making a right (was doing 27 in 35) so I overtook on a double yellow. Sitting cop lit me up. Bad timing - nice car was all he said after looking for the usuals. It's a 4 pointer!!! But I can plea to zero and pass over $$ to my greedy town.

They are like that around here too, If you are just below 10 MPH you are pretty much OK. I got stopped once as I passed someone and he clocked me at 13 over. He said the speed limit is 70 just keep it below 80 and you will be fine, he let me off.
I usually do keep it to 8-9 over on the highway, just happened to have sped up to pass someone.

I never go more than 4mph over (if that) unless the flow of traffic is such that I will not stick out... Seems to be working as I've got 15 or so years as a driver under my belt so far and I've never had a ticket or been pulled over. Perfect driving record is perfect.

I think 10 over is pretty common among LEO's. 11 over might get you pulled over, 15 will get you a citation.

How do you do that? Personally, I don't think I would even bothered buying a Vette if I was NEVER going to go more than 4mph over the speed limit.

If you speed (within reason) in your local area, a ticket will typically just mean you have to play their little game of pleading down to a parking ticket where (1) you don't get points and (2) the town gets some of your money.

Now when I'm out of town, that's where I really worry about my speed. If you're a few hundred miles from home, it's going to be a lot harder to play their little game.

I bought my Vette for the track, not to be Speedy Speederton on the streets. It gets great gas mileage while NOT pushing it and driving faster just means LESS time I get to have with her.

9 mph over the speed limit is usually the magic number, 10 mph and you'll likely get pulled over. I think at 11 mph over is when you get bumped into the extra points system and higher fines as well as a judge less likely to plea bargain with you. And since not every speedometer is exact and can be .5-.75 mph under the actual speed, that's why you keep it under 10 mph over the limit.

Sorry dude, but I was reading your post and it brought back (many) memories of NJ and one of the reasons I left in 93. Not knowing any other life style but NJ I did not know that there was a True America out there lol. I moved to NC. I remember sitting by the beach ,seaside hights, waiting for the sun to come up as a young man and being told by pos police that if I did not leave that I would be arrested. The most corrupt state next ti Calif. Yes the only thing they want is your $$$$$, you can buy your way out of almost anything. I remember being pulled over on the Parkway and being ticketed for driving in the left lane, no one on the road but me. Good Luck.

Escort Passport 9500 and blend mount you would have seen his signature long before any Christmas lights. Reduce speed a little.....out of the his radar range kick it back up to make up for loss time. If he pulls ya over its because he will tell ya the C6 has the best tailights.

Possibly, but I suspect that the town/city courts will almost always try to plea down to keep their revenue stream flowing.

Most of my "speeding" isn't really speeding at all. I practically launch from red lights and get up to 7 or 8 miles over the speed limit...then back off to a 4 or 5 miles over. It's VERY common for me to get way ahead of the person in the next lane after the light turns green....then watch them eventually pass me when they get up to speed. In my book, they are the bigger speeders.

However, when there are a lot of traffic lights, I typically make the next light before it turns red...and they don't. That's probably the biggest difference I see in driving a Vette. You don't necessarily have to speed, but by getting up to the speed limit so fast, you don't get stuck behind fast changing lights.

On the interstate in eastern Kentucky on my way back from NC and my son's wedding. Speed limit 70 and I got a ticket for going 81. Had the cruise on at 9 over and it is hilly so the motor gave it a push up and over the crest and there right below it was radar. A total suck spot for me.

He was not the State Patrol but the local from the big town of Milton that came up to the Interstate to get some coin so there was no warning....no discussion...just a ticket. My first in 14 years and I put on 45k+ for work a year so I can't gripe too much. Wrong is wrong but I wonder if the State guys would have given me a warning and told me to cool it?

Almost was lit-up at night.

Was doing mid 60's in a 55 in the left hand lane with headlights close up on my rear bumper. Kept a cool head and calmly moved to the right hand lane. The car immediately passed me... with a LEO following him. Half a mile later... the other driver was lit-up!

Couldn't help but giggle.

You'll get pulled over all day long around here for 10 over. They usually let 3 to 4 over slide by. 5 and above and your gonna pay.

I can't count the times I am targeted by laser when going the speed limit while other cars passed me on the left. Seems they like to check my speed.

OK, I'm from the west coast. What does LEO stand for? Must be something common to states west of CA. I can only assume it means Law Enforcement Officer - correct? In CA we have the CHP (California Highway Patrol) commonly known as "Chippys" They can be real A$$ holes especially around LA.

My friend who is a Leo always says 9 your fine, 10 your mine.

That said I did get a ticket for 64 in a 55 once.
