73 Intake for stock hood
Hi everyone. Building a 383 stroker for my 73. Need an intake that will fit the stock hood. So far only found Edelbrock 2101 performer. Think I'm going to use Quadrajet, though shop is leaning towards EFI.

Seems like a Performer RPM will work with a drop base air cleaner. An RPM Air Gap might on that model. Someone will chime in here about it for sure.

On my '73, I'm running the Holley Contender 300-36. It's the aftermarket version of the early 70s LT-1 high rise intake. I'm running a Holley Street Avenger carb, Holley heat shield, 3" air filter element, 1.5" drop base air cleaner, and a flat billet air cleaner lid. The lid is approximately 1/4" thick above the air filter. The **** that secures the air cleaner lid sticks up about 1/4" above the air cleaner and I have about 1/2" clearance from that **** to the hood.
The outside edge of the air cleaner lid in one spot toward the AC compressor just barely touches the inner hood at times. I can see rub marks. To solve this, I either need a different air cleaner lid that is less than 1/4" thick at the edges and doesn't rise much in the middle, or I need to replace the 5/16" carb gasket that came with the heat shield with a slightly smaller (maybe 1/4") gasket.
This setup barely clears the choke plate on the carb. I'd rather have more space between the air cleaner lid and top of the carb but that's as good as I can get with this setup. All in all, it's a tight fit but it runs well. My future plans include EFI and I'll look at different setups then.

Regular rpm has better response and more torque in the normal driving range.... the cut out under the Carb is a trade off between single and dual plane and can give better top end at cost of power and response everywhere else.... just like using an open spacer under a Carb on a real dual plane... the cutout is the only real functional difference between the rpm and air gap... the air space under the runners is more a gimmick.... testing has found it only gives a slight advantage until the engine warms u then air temps are the same anyway.
