Default Cooling fans issue

Driving 02Z back to work from lunch today I noticed water temp reading over 220 on gauge. Hit the readout and it said 232 degrees I suspected cooling fans blown fuse. Got to work, jumped out real quick and checked and sure enough, they where not running. I checked the 10 amp and 30 amp fuses and they seemed fine. Plugged them back in. Started the car and the fans came on fine. Drove home later in the day and no issue. Is this possibly a indication of something getting ready to crap out? Was a very hot day if that matters. Just prefer to get ahead of it if I can

On a hot day with the stock fan settings, 220+ and even 230+ isn't abnormal.

See this related thread:

I see 220-230 if im sitting in traffic and the a/c is not on. If its creeping up even with the AC you're definitely having a cooling issue. make sure at least the condenser fan is running, if it is I'd check the radiator for debris.

Mine is starting to see 220-230ish temps in stop'n'go rush hour traffic. Once moving will drop back to mid 190s to 205, this is with AC on. We are getting close to 100 in the afternoon and relative humidity has been in the 90% range. I usually leave the office after 6:30 to avoid the nastiest part of rush hour and temps are starting to go down by then...Once we get to 100+ days the water temps will go 230+, that starts to worry me. I replaced both fans last year, have flushed and re-filled the radiator and cleaned debris. I thinking of completely dropping it to either replace or have it tanked/cleaned.

Copied from the thread I linked above...

In order to lower your temps, this is the sequence of actions you should take:

1) Inspect the radiator closely; clean out any debris that's stuck in it, being careful to not bend any of the fins. A wire brush is useful, but blowing pressurized air or water through the radiator from back to front is probably the most effective technique.

2) Seal up the edges of the radiator shroud, using tape or something like this:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-z...t-cooling.html

3) Have your fan settings adjusted to come on at a lower temp.

4) At this point, you should be running at a good temperature under pretty much any conditions (aside from heavy track use). If you still want to run cooler, then the last thing you should do is swap the tstat to a lower temp unit (and adjust the fan settings accordingly).

Before you spend the time/money required for that, I'd suggest looking into #2 and especially #3 in my list above.

Excellent write-up on the silicone/foam seal! I will try that next, my tuner has already lowered the temps for fan activation

another option you can use on top of the electronic adjustment and T-stat is a manual fan switch. flip on and have it manually turn on both fans and force them to run. I would choose a 12v switched source so you dont forget ot turn them off when the car is off and drain the battery. should be articals on how to do it, not that hard..Switch, relay and some wires.

I'm with you Dave... I too am in TX.. and it is getting HOT brother... I had those same issues on Monday... AC blaring (ice cold) in my Black car... stop/go traffic.. temps climbing to 230+.....

Figured WTH.... 135K on the bottom end... and on my radiator, fans, so I pulled the trigger on a Dewitts radiator, dual fan set up... new 160 deg t stat, fresh Dex cool, distilled water, and a thorough cleaning of debris... You cannot put a price on cooling IMO.... and it's only money right....

i'll def post up results once installed.... til then..

That Dewitts setup is nice! That is the rad I have been eyeing, going to try skyvonee's DIY shroud seal and another thorough cleaning, as well as a flush. If that does not do it, will likely order that Dewitt radiator.

The damn humidity here is just so brutal, I will take the dry heat any day

In Phoenix and we were experiencing 109-113 Days this last week

Im running about 210 as the norm but when in heavy traffic ive seen it climb a little over 220 - Just had the radiator flush with new coolant.

Agreed - dry heat beats wet heat any day of the week.

I would just like to reiterate (not to you specifically, but to anyone who reads this thread) that this is a completely normal situation for our cars. LSx engines run hotter than the small blocks of yesteryear. It's by design, and it's not gonna hurt anything. Some timing will be pulled, but it's stop-and-go, so who cares? Once you start moving and air gets flowing through the radiator, then temps drop, and you're ready to hammer the accelerator again.

That'll sure be nice. If you're able to, I'd be interested in the difference in dry weight between our stock unit and the DeWitts. I think the DeWitts has like twice the coolant volume?

I'll tell you what... I'll do it "Toque" style from start to finish... weight difference, temps before, after, and yes Sky... the Dewitts has dual coolant tanks.. the OEM fans have only 1600 CFM... which is good... I am not knocking it... But the Dewitts have twice the output at 3200 CFM... Like most of you guys I am very **** and Meticulous... Some might balk at the upgrade... but FOR ME it's money well spent... I'll post up my results....

Here is a link for those interested

http://www.dewitts.com/collections/c...ator-automatic ... also, I did a lot of research on these (Auto X section) as well as just driving... < heat is indeed more HP.... To me, it's a no brainer... Again, the main reason I am changing is mine is coming up on 13 yrs service and it has served me well! Not knocking the OEM radiators at all FOR THE RECORD.

Ever tried the Remote Hi Speed Fan Controller by SacCity, no need to worry about idling in stop & go traffic anymore, works great, quality product and relatively inexpensive.

Thats crazy you see temps at 220+ WITH the AC on. I drove mine last week when it was 115 outside and i never saw anything above 210 while sitting in traffic. This has been the case for my car since ive owned it.

I did replace the water pump a few years back so maybe that has something to do with it? Even with the lower temps I've come close to getting a deWitts Radiator and will probably do so when I build the motor this winter.

Had my coolant go up to ~230-240 with AC on in 100 degree stop and go traffic yesterday. Pulled over for gas and popped the hood and I could hear a whistling noise from my coolant over flow tank. The nipple at the top with that hose that goes from the tank to the radiator had had a crack in it, so I ordered a new one this morning. Also played around with the fans using HPTuners and when I forced them to high speed, only the right one was turning on. Tried it on my Formula and same thing happened, only the right one turned on. Going to try changing the relay (coolingfan3)
