Default C3 exhaust suggestions

Hey Guys,

Looking to purchase some mufflers for my 75. My plan is order a stainless steel pipe kit (off road) to get rid of the cat converters and then bolt on aftermarket mufflers. I have been looking at the Magnaflow mufflers http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/universalmuffler.asp and also Borla mufflers http://www.borla.com/products/proxs_centercenter.html.

I want a good amount of sound even at idle. Can you please tell me what you have had success with? Also, I need to know the diameter of the pipe that was originally installed so that I can make it match up. I have found that some places have the pipe kits that are pre shaped to fit into these vettes. Please include any info that you have.

I just installed a conversion kit from Corvette Central. It has 2.5 inch pipes with Magnaflows .If you have stock exhaust manifolds , then the exhaust should fit pretty easy. The pipes start at 2 inch at the manifolds, then go to 2.5 the rest of the way. Easy install and they look and sound great.Very happy with my choice. I have a thread running in this forum , exhaust arrived today , check it out. Plus I had gotten really good advice from other forum members. Good Luck

I had magnaflow on my mine when I first purchased it, sounded clean with a bit of drone but not how I like a muscle car to sound. I switched to dual flowmaster super 44's and loved them, sounded so good. instead of running them all the way out the back and having the pipes drop low under the rear end I placed the mufflers flat under the floor, right where the seats are and then ran dumps before the rear end. I was having scraping issues because of how low my car is. If I did that again I would do turn outs and run thin long tips out the side before the wheels. But If your trying to keep it more stock then I'm sure one of the kits will make you happy. Could save some money laying it out yourself and having a shop bend some tubing and weld it up.

I went from a turbo style muffler to a straight through type like Mangnaflow. The mufflers on my car are considered generic Magnaflows or knock off's. Here some data, pics and a video for sound.

What they sound like on a car with a small block and headers.

Some flow data of the Magnaflow Vs Jones Exhaust

I have flowmaster 40's and they give a nice "old school" sound.

Flowmasters if you want to sound like a real hot rod, anything else to sound like a 73 Ford pickup with a 3 on the tree.

2 3/4" manderal bend exhaust, Borla 3" mufflers and an X-pipe for me...... 7K RPM shifts....

IMHO, 3" was to big to deal with with out C3's and 2.5" was to small for my needs....

good luck brother!!!

Thanks Freddy 76. That's the same kit I've been looking at. Seems like it would be a relatively simple install and everything is shaped the way it needs to be to fit in.

Has anyone heard these vettes with borla mufflers? It seems to be a rare thing to find. The PRO XS mufflers would probably sound nice on these cars but I'd hate to try them without hearing to compare.

We're glad so many of you are happy with your MagnaFlow systems! We want to make sure you have the quality you need - and of course, the sound and power you want!

So hard to tell from clips exactly what yours wil sound like.

Cam profile headers/manifolds hp level etc ALL has a changing effect on the note. Even tuning can change the note

If it was up to me Id change mufflers like mood swings

Pick the sound you like dont worry about power youll probably never notice a difference until you get waaaaay up there in power levels

Here's a couple videos of my '78 with Borlas during the corvette corral pace lap at the Mosport ALMS race last year.

I think I fixed the links.
