Vin won't tell you a lot, You want to check and see if any service records, Check for oil leaks around motor and around the diff, You also might want to check the codes, You can do this within the car no reader needed.
The "diagnostic display" mode is entered with thefollowing procedure:
1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the "reset" button to turn off any warningmessages
3) Press and hold "options"
4) While holding "options", press "fuel" fourtimes within a 10-second period.
When first engaged the on-board diagnostics go into an "automatic"mode which shows all parameters:PCM-TCS-RTD-BCM-IPC-radio-HVAC-LDCM-RDCM-SCM-RFA. If there are no problems, youwill see "no more codes" on the ICP display.
The computer will show two kinds of codes, "current" and"history," designated "C" or "H". A current codeindicates a malfunction is present in the system whose module is displayingdata. A history code indicates a past problem.
When the screen displays "manual diagnostics," selectthe desired module by pressing the "options" button to go forward orthe "trip" button to go back. Press "gages" to go forwardor "fuel" to go back.
To exit the diagnostic mode at any time, press "E/M". Ifyou want to erase or "clear" codes, press "reset."

You're going to buy it... and spend lots of time and money modifying it.. headaches getting it right... tuning.. etc.
Just buy mine that's already done.. right!

Art, you can't buy a fake '04 Z. They stopped making the Fixed Roof coupe-only option in 2001, when they introduced the new Z06. The Z has a permanent hard top with a trunk, while the 'sport coupe' has a large rear glass in a hatchback configuration.

I have seen far too many coupes and convertibles with Z06 brake duct coolers, mesh grill inserts, and Z06 badges. It ain't a Z06!!
