When shifting from gear to gear (especially 1st to 2nd) the shifter doesn't glide smoothly, but is more "choppy". Any suggestions on where I should look first?

Common Issue. Dealer calls it "Normal Vehicle Operation".

Invest in an MGW shifter ($250). A really good mod to have IMO.

Yup.....my 12 and 13 both had tiny issues. The 12 felt notchier than the 13 but the 13 likes to be manhandled more so going in to 2nd. If not it feels like it will almost pop out of 2nd....not that it has but it feels funny. The dealership I think had a little fun with this car. I have lots of warranty left though.

You didn't mention your car's year. My 2006 shifts very smoothly, just glides into gear with the exception or reverse. You have to really push the lever over to find the gate and a firm push is needed to engage gear.

I have a 2006. I have only had the car since May and wasn't sure if it was normal or not. The one post describes it perfectly. "notchy"

I guess it is normal, but wanted to make sure.

Notchiness with these trnmissions should disappear, once warm.

IF after warmed you're still experiencing notchy shifting?
Could be synchros.
Had 'em replaced in my '06 & thank all that's holy the job was covered under warranty. Not a cheap fix, replacing synchros.

My advice if it is a 2006...change the manual transmission fluid. I just had similar issues and it was fixed afterwards. I also changed out the rear differential fluid to the 2009+ sauce and it eliminated the rear clunking issue. Lastly, flushed the DOT3 and it feels like a new vehicle. I hope this helps.

My 2012 feels really notchy going into 2nd, it really almost feels like cags is half engaged. Sometimes it really feels like I'm going through two gates to get the gear, but from what I've read this is fairly normal.

In fact, just to see if it was the blown smartglow fuse I installed causing the problem, I removed it today to have the same effect. I'm really contemplating getting an mgw.

You might not have noticed it as much during the Arizona summer.

Cooler weather makes it worse.

It definitely should improve after warm-up. This is normal.

I managed to get the car shifting nicely by doing three things,
1. synthetic ATF transmission fluid - much smoother when cold
2. copper washer on side of transmission to reduce tension - look up anti-venom method on this site
3. MGW shifter

It has gotten a little worse during the past few weeks as it has cooled down, so I am sure that has something to do with it. I wil start checking into getting the fluid changed out.

I put an MGW in my car a year after I bought it. After the easy installation of about an hour, and a test drive, I realized I should have done it right after I bought the car. Don't wait, great company, and awesome product!

Just called my dealer about a transmission flush. They quoted me $149. Is that in line?

I have an mgw as well and its very "notchy" I think the op wants smoother less nothcy shift which the mgw wont cure. However I will say its the best shifter I have used and couldnt go back to stock.

I don't find it "notchy" at all. Mine is smooth and precise. Simply "clicks" into gear.
